Zara immediately fired back. “Who said I’m giving birth? I’m not giving birth! If I do, he won’t even be able to get treated. Bringing the baby into the world won’t just hurt me–it’ll ruin the kid!”
Though Zara was usually blunt, she now fully grasped the gravity of the situation.
Kenny was seriously ill. And if there was a chance the child could inherit it, that would doom the baby for life.
Her expression firm, Zara said a clear no.
Kenny’s face instantly turned green. “Who said I can’t be treated? I’m fine!”
Zara shot him a look. “Wasn’t that what you said yourself? You’re denying it now? Do you take me for an idiot?”
“Hey, Miss, you’ve got it all wrong!”
Niamh quickly stepped in to explain to Zara, speaking in soft, gentle tones to avoid startling the baby in her womb.
“Kenny is sick, yes, and it’s true he has an untreatable condition–but it’s not life–threatening”
Niamh hesitated, but eventually spoke the truth. “It’s just that he can’t perform sexually. Everything else is fine. And the baby you’re carrying? It’s our family’s only hope.”
She said it out loud, right in front of everyone. Kenny froze, completely embarrassed, covering his face while hopping around. “Mom! Did you even think about me?”
“It’s okay. I’m the baby’s grandmother. Of course, my priority is the child, your only child!”
She knew what mattered most. Her son might be ruined, but her grandson still held hope.
“What?”
Zara instinctively glanced at Kenny’s lower half. “You’re out of commission?”
Kenny’s face darkened. He was so frustrated by their words that he couldn’t utter a single thing.
Oriana leaned in quietly. “It’s a long story. I’ll explain it to you later.”
Zara’s eyes lit up. “Great! Tell me as soon as we get back!”
Kenny rolled his eyes.
Stay away from me when you talk about it, you guys. I’m not dead yet!
Niamh wiped away the tears of excitement welling in her eyes and took Zara’s hands. Usually proud, she lowered her head, speaking sincerely.

“Zara, I know this might feel like too much, but I’m begging you–please keep this child. It might be Kenny’s only child-”
Kenny reacted strongly. “Mom! What are you doing? I can be treated! Why does it have to be about the baby?”
“You’re being reckless. You’re young and don’t understand the consequences. Do you want to regret not keeping this child later?”
Niamh gently pushed Kenny aside and continued to Zara.
“Zara, if you agree to have the baby, we’ll fulfill any request you make–anything within our power. Whether you choose to be with Kenny for the rest of your life or not, we’ll respect your decision and provide the best support possible. There’s only one condition. You must carry the baby to term.”
Cordell stepped beside his wife and assured her, “As the mother of a Caldwell family child, while the Caldwell family exists, we’ll protect you every day.”
Kenny couldn’t believe even his rigid, conservative father was siding against him. “Dad, are you crazy too?”
Zara didn’t blink. She looked at the woman in front of her, practically begging on her knees, and a bold thought suddenly sparked in her mind.
Still, she didn’t answer immediately. She gently tried to withdraw her hands from Niamh’s, expressing herself tactfully. “I haven’t decided yet. Can you give me some time to think?”
“Of course.”
As long as she didn’t terminate the pregnancy, there was hope.
Niamh smiled. “You and Oriana are close friends, right? Are your family in Jindiwood?”
“No, my parents are in Seabar. I just came from there.”
“In that case, since you don’t have a place to stay in Jindiwood yet, why don’t you come back with us to the Caldwell family? If you’re uncomfortable, we’ll arrange another place for you.”
“No, it’s fine. I’m good as long as I’m with Oriana.”
