Grant stood thoughtfully, watching the direction where Jonathan disappeared for a long moment before turning and stepping into the elevator.

After he left, at the end of the corridor, Jonathan peeked out sideways and waved at the waiter who hadn’t entered the elevator with Grant.

“Hi, Jonathan.”

She took out her phone and transferred him a thousand dollars. The waiter smiled warmly. “I told Mr. Holloway exactly what you

asked.”

“Good. Remember what I told you.”

“Don’t worry, Jonathan. This stays between us.” The waiter nodded knowingly. “Next time Mr. Holloway comes around, I’ll send you a message.”

Jonathan smiled, satisfied, and then left.

Luna was useless. Jonathan didn’t believe Grant could hold back from looking for her!

After three hours on the bus, the group finally arrived at their destination.

The village roads were narrow, so they switched to smaller vehicles and eventually reached Sunrise Village.

Once settled, Oriana immediately called Micah on video.

She could imagine how long he’d been waiting for her call. As soon as she dialed, his face filled the entire screen–a flawless, sculpted profile with perfect features from every angle.

His phone was held close; the sharp bridge of his nose was right in the center. Seeing him felt almost like he was right there with her, making her cheeks warm.

“Made it?”

“Okay.”

“Why did it take forty minutes longer than expected?”

Oriana laughed. Was Micah really timing her?

She explained gently, “We transferred buses at the county seat. The roads in the village are

narrow, and there are only two eleven–seater mini–buses going back and forth. It took two trips to get all of us in.”

Micah nodded understandingly. “Getting used to it? How’s the environment? Where are you staying?”

“The village chief arranged homestays for us. They have everything we need, but there are a lot of us, so it’s four per room.”

Just as Oriana finished, her three roommates who had gone out to explore returned. Seeing Oriana video chatting with Micah, they teased her with smiles. “Dr. Sterling, missing your husband after just one day?”

“That’s not even a day; it’s only been half a day!”

“No, it’s only been three and a half hours!”

Oriana’s ears flushed red from their teasing. The three laughed and joked without disturbing her and soon headed next door to chat.

Once they left, Oriana turned to Micah, complaining, “Great, now everyone’s making fun of me.”

Micah heard the playful tone in her voice and took it seriously for a moment. “I’ll talk to the deputy director and see if he can help.”

“No!” Oriana immediately frowned, angry. “Micah, you’re not allowed to say anything.”

Grinning, Micah teased, “Alright, I won’t say a word.”

When she realized he was joking, Oriana’s lips curved into a sweet smile.

“Okay, I’m going to pack now. Should I hang up, or do you want to listen to me pack?”

Micah replied, “I’ll listen.”

She expected that answer and smiled helplessly. She propped the phone up in a corner facing her and opened her suitcase to start packing bedding.

Focused on her task, she didn’t notice how intently and gently Micah was watching her through the phone.

Tomorrow

Afraid he might get bored, she started talking about her schedule for the next day. “Our volunteer work is divided into three groups. I’m with Director Hill from surgery. we’ll be going house to house to see the villagers.”

Micah frowned. “Shouldn’t you set up volunteer clinics and have the villagers come to you?”

“That’s the usual way,” Oriana said, “but it’s different here. Sunrise Village has almost no young people left; mostly elderly residents stay behind. They’re old–fashioned and associate seeing a doctor with spending money. Based on past volunteer records, if we just set up public clinics, the village elders wouldn’t come on their own. The most effective way is to visit each household individually, one by one.”

Micah’s brow furrowed. “How long will that take?”

“Not too bad. Sunrise Village has fewer than a thousand households. It should take about two weeks to finish.”
