Chapter 499 Unexpected Gift

Kieran was visibly downcast. Seeing Oriana approach, he greeted her briefly before quietly excusing himself.

It was rare to see Kieran in such a state, and Oriana couldn’t help but frown. “Are you having difficulties at work?”

She had assumed their hasty departure earlier was to handle some work–related matter.

“It’s nothing,” Micah brushed it off lightly, steering the conversation elsewhere. “Are we heading back?”

Oriana was a bit surprised. “It’s almost four. Won’t you stay and have dinner with Noah?”

“No.” Micah was firm. “I want to go home.”

Oriana didn’t press him. “Alright, then I’ll go tell Noah, and we’ll leave.”

“Mm.”

Noah was quite reluctant to see them leave without even staying for a meal.

Oriana coaxed him with gentle words, and with Zara chiming in to help, they soon had him soothed and content–any hint of a sulk quickly faded away.

Before they left, Zara kept winking exaggeratedly at her. “Don’t worry, just head back and work your magic. I’ve got things covered here!”

After a pause, Zara leaned in closer, wiggling her eyebrows as she offered advice. “Want me to order you some ‘special gear‘ from one of those delivery apps?”

Oriana didn’t quite follow her train of thought. “What apps?”

“You know, food delivery!”

Oriana was even more confused. “What kind of ‘reconciliation gear‘ can you get on a delivery app?”

Aside from ordering food and medicine, she’d never really explored what else was on offer.

Zara gave her a knowing look. “Oh, there’s plenty of special gear on there. Send me your address, and I’ll order some for you. It’ll arrive by the time you get home–guaranteed to work like a charm!”

Oriana was intrigued. If it really worked, she might even be able to reuse it in the future. Trusting Zara innocently, she agreed, “Alright, I’ll send it to you. I’d better get going now.”

“Go on. The stuff will be there soon!”

Oriana turned and left, completely missing the mischievous, scheming grin on Zara’s face as she opened her phone.

On the way back, Oriana stuck to her usual tactics: starting with soft words, then moving to hugs and clinging to him.

They made it back to their apartment just before the evening rush hour began.

As they stepped out of the elevator, they happened to see Chubby standing by the door, holding a yellow delivery bag and wandering in circles.

Having not seen its owners for days, the little robot was overjoyed. It tugged on the bag, circling them excitedly. “Oriana! Chubby missed you so much that I’m bubbling over!”

Oriana reached out and patted the little one’s head, watching as the big eyes on its screen narrowed into contented slits.

“You little thing, how are you bubbling?”

As Chubby spoke, its screen changed, and a stream of heart–shaped bubbles began floating up one after another, all in a particularly sweet shade of pink.

Oriana couldn’t help but laugh. She turned her gaze, only to see Micah’s indifferent expression. Gently tugging his sleeve, she asked, “Why is making up so difficult this time, Mr. Caldwell?”

Stopping at the bedroom door, Micah listened intently for a moment, but there seemed to be no movement inside.

After a brief silence, concern getting the better of him, he finally knocked on the door.

His voice was clear and calm, feigning nonchalance. “We’re running low on groceries. What are you in the mood for tonight? Chicken piccata, maybe a steak sandwich, or I could try that beef and vegetable stew you saved from the food blog yesterday?”

When the two were alone in Sunrise Village with little else to do, Oriana would often lean against Micah while scrolling through her phone. After several days of algorithmic suggestions, she now frequently came across various recipes. Micah had noted down a few, waiting for the chance to make them for her one by one.

When there was no response from the room, Micah pushed the door open and stepped inside.

As soon as he entered, a sweet, alcohol–tinged scent wafted into his nostrils.

Seeing the woman half–lying against the bay window ledge, Micah frowned and quickly moved toward her.

But just as he took a step forward, his vision suddenly went dark–the entire world plunged into pitch–black darkness.

Caught off guard and unable to adjust his momentum in time, Micah collided hard with the corner of the dressing table, letting out

a dull thud. Forced to halt, veins bulged on his forehead.
