Zara was practically drooling. “It’s really that good? Let me have a taste too!” She went for a second scoop.
But Kenny wouldn’t allow it. He seized both her hands. “No way. You can’t have any. What if you do get poisoned?”
“If you’re fine, how could I get poisoned?”
“Come on, are we the same? Even if you’re okay, what about the…” Kenny’s gaze flickered apprehensively to Zara’s abdomen. The little life inside was still so fragile!
Zara, who had been buzzing with excitement, deflated instantly like a punctured balloon. She shoved the spoon into Kenny’s hand, slumped onto the table in a huff, and fixed a baleful stare on the hourglass. “How much longer?!”
While the two of them squabbled, on the other side, Oriana was seized by a rare mischievous impulse. She stealthily snagged an unopened set of utensils from the next table.
Zara had tempted Kenny with so much talk, and even though he hadn’t yielded, Oriana’s curiosity was thoroughly piqued.
As a medical student, she knew the principles behind mushroom poisoning–neurotoxins and hemolytic toxins. But still… this business of getting any hallucinations“… she genuinely wanted to experience it. Would it feel different?
With that thought, Oriana couldn’t wait any longer. She stealthily extended her hand.
“Honey.”
Oriana might have avoided Zara and Kenny, but alas, she hadn’t escaped Micah’s watchful
gaze.
Micah grasped both her hands, one in each of his, his expression a mix of exasperation and deep fondness. “Don’t be naughty. Just five more minutes. It’ll be ready soon.”
Oriana giggled, blinking up at him pleadingly. “But I want to try it! I want to see if I can really see little people. I was just reading about it last night; I’m really curious about the sensation.
Micah’s brows drew tightly together. “Taking an interest in that sort of thing is not advisable.”
“I know, I know! But I’ll just have a tiny sip, a minuscule taste! It should be fine!” Trapped with her hands in his, she could only shake them under the table. “Micah, please? Just one sip, one little sip. I won’t have any more. Please…”

Oriana’s pleas, one after another, were enough to melt the very core of his resolve.

The moment Micah’s grip loosened, Oriana moyed as if another second would ruin the mushrooms. She quickly ladled a small half–bowl and even sneakily picked up a thinly sliced piece of it.
Oriana took a tentative sip, and her eyes instantly lit up. “It’s seriously so delicious!” Eagerly, she brought the spoon to Micah’s lips. “Want to try?”
Micah pressed his lips together. “I won’t.”
Oriana blinked. “Why not?”
“If you really do get poisoned, and I fall ill too, who will take care of you?” He stated this with the weary air of someone who had already considered every angle.
That line of reasoning… was annoyingly logical!
Oriana stuck out her tongue and popped the other half of the mushroom slice into her own mouth. It was truly delicious!
“Vah! Oriana! You actually snuck a taste behind my back!! You’re not my friend anymore!!”
Zara had finally caught sight of the activity on their side and was angry.
“Zara. I’m just tasting it for you in advance. Once you’ve had the baby, you can experience it too,” Oriana declared without a trace of shame, her face not even flushing.
Zara turned her head away with an indignant, “Hmph!”
Finally, the last five–minute countdown ended. When the server approached, they found the table’s guests rather… peculiar. The two male guests were each holding onto both hands of the female guest beside them, as if either engaged in some strange game or desperately preventing them from eating secretly…
“The mushroom fondue is ready to enjoy. You can start with a bowl of the broth, then cook the side dishes.”
“Great, thank you.”
Freed at last, Zara wasted no time. She snatched up her utensils and made a beeline for the
