That’s right, Mr. Caldwell! We’re here for a mushroom fondue!” Zara responded warmly.
No sooner had the words left her mouth than Niamh, visible behind Noah on the screen, exclaimed in alarm, “Ah! They’re really having mushrooms! Noah, you have to tell them, some are poisonous, they shouldn’t eat them!”
Oriana, overhearing, quickly reassured her. “Don’t worry. The people here are very experienced. As long as they’re cooked through, there’s no risk.
Zara, also worried Noah might forbid it, quickly added, “Yes! The owner is being so careful; he hasn’t even given us our utensils yet. See?” She took the phone and panned it around the table, showing a distinct lack of any utensils.
Noah nodded, visibly relieved. “Good. Just be careful while you’re out.”
“Mm–hmm! Don’t you worry!”
Zara shared a few funny anecdotes from the day, especially the bit about Kenny picking leaves, which had Noah roaring with laughter. Niamh and Cordell could only listen with a mix of amusement and second–hand embarrassment.
Their son really was… something else.
At least they were about to start a “new game” soon. Otherwise, their grand life plans truly couldn’t be entrusted to Kenny.
After chatting for a while longer, Zara finally ended the call and handed the phone back to Oriana.
A small smile touched Oriana’s lips. “I didn’t expect you to get along with the family so well, Zara.”
“Ah, when it comes to winning people over quickly, you can count on me.”
Just then, the fondue pot began to simmer, sending up fragrant, savory steam.
Having worked up an appetite all afternoon, the enticing aroma only made their stomachs growl louder.
Zara stared fixedly at the bubbling pot, licking her lips. “Can we eat now? Let’s get the utensils!”
Kenny checked the timer. “Don’t rush. The twenty–minute hourglass isn’t up yet.”

“It looks almost done! What’s another few minutes?” A mischievous grin suddenly spread across Zara’s face, her eyes locked on Kenny. “How about you be the brave one… and taste it?”
Kenny asked, “Is that any way for a human to talk?”
Zara shifted closer to him on the seat, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial, tempting whisper. “Don’t you want to… experience the hallucinations? I hear it’s quite a trip.”
A crack appeared in Kenny’s expression of disdain. He wavered for a second before firming his resolve. “Hah. And what if I don’t get any hallucinations and just… kick the bucket instead?”
“How could you possibly kick the bucket? It’s been simmering for ages. Besides, these aren’t those weird, multi–colored mushrooms. They’re not nearly that toxic.” Zara kept nudging him. “Just give it a try! Aren’t you the least bit curious? We traveled all this way–don’t tell me you’re actually scared?”
Kenny was speechless.
She really knew how to play that card.
Zara was like a witch reciting an incantation. She’d worn light makeup when they left, but most had worn off, leaving her natural, fair complexion. Now, to coax him into mischief, her eyes were curved, her face lit with a radiant smile as she leaned right into his space, chattering nonstop.
Kenny’s initial resistance crumbled. He found himself staring at Zara, completely captivated. H.3 gaze, especially, fixed on her rapidly moving lips. His mind felt oddly foggy, filled with only one thought, as if he’d already been poisoned.
He really wanted to kis her…
Zara noticed Kenny seemed to have checked out just staring at her motionlessly. That look in his eyes… she’d seen it just this morning. How could she not know what he was thinking?
Hmph, pervert! Always thinking about kissing. Besides kissing, you can’t do anything else anyway!
Her lively eyes darted around and landed on a large serving spoon a waiter had left behind. A deeper glint of amusement flashed in her eyes. She reached for it, scooped up some of the hot broth, and brought it to Kenny’s lips.
“Here you go, my dear… enjoy it.”
