Zara wrinkled her nose and turned around. “Who are you snarling at with that passive–aggressive tone?”

Behind her, Kenny was ascending the stairs.

He had his hands clasped casually behind his head. Even though he was looking up at her from below, his gaze dripped with arrogance and condescension, as if he had already seen through every one of her thoughts.

“My grandfather and parents might not see it, but you think I don’t?”

Kenny scoffed. By now, he had reached the top step, meeting Zara’s gaze levelly.

“When you heard Grandpa offer you such an expensive gift, you were probably screaming with joy on the inside.”

His gaze swept coldly over her chest before he continued.

“You were dying to say yes immediately. But you knew that if you just grabbed something that valuable, my family would start to wonder about your character, and it would be harder to get more benefits out of them later.

“You’re playing the long game. So you retreated to advance–making up excuses about your ‘fate‘ not holding wealth, putting it in the baby’s name, and then securing a windfall for your best friend Oriana too. It doesn’t benefit you directly now, but you’ll surely get your cut later. I have to admit, it was a brilliant move. As I was coming up, I heard Grandpa telling my parents how sensible and modest you are.”

As he finished the sentence, Kenny took the final step onto the landing.

He was taller than Zara. In that half–arm’s length of distance, the dynamic shifted from him looking up to him looking down on her. Convinced he had unraveled her entire scheme, his tone was mocking, arrogant, and laced with a hint of angry disgust.

To Zara, the contempt in Kenny’s eyes was undisguised.

It was exactly the same look he had given her the morning after their one–night stand.

Zara knew he had always looked down on her, seeing her as a gold digger hungry for fame and profit.

She didn’t care. To her, Kenny was just the biological father of her child. Thanks to him, the Radcliffe family had dodged a bullet, and she had gained quite a few perks.

As for the occasional hormonal glitch where she found him attractive? That was just a momentary lapse in judgment; it didn’t count.

Right now, a fire was burning in her chest. She wanted to reach out, grab him by the neck, and shake all that stupid, judgmental garbage out of his brain.

Kenny snapped, exasperated.

Zara picked at her ear, letting his curse go in one side and out the other.

To Kenny, it looked like she didn’t take him seriously at all.
