Chapter 588 Task

“Oh, so that’s why! I heard Janet has a thing with one of the big bosses at group headquarters…”
“Since when is work time for gossiping? Did you already submit your drafts?”
Just as Zara was enjoying the juicy tidbits, a cold, ruthless voice cut through the air, making her heart skip a beat.
She looked toward the source and saw a capable, slender woman emerging from a glass office. With just one sharp reprimand, the two women gossiping by the door turned pale with fear. They clearly dreaded her, immediately bowing their heads and murmuring, “Ms. Cohen.”
Zara realized who she was. Before coming, she had briefed herself on Lumen Gold’s personnel structure. The design department was managed by three directors, overseeing online collections, offline retail, and the high–end line respectively.
Janet Cohen was the lead designer for the high–end Lustre Line and the youngest, fastest–rising designer since the company’s inception,
Zara had bought quite a bit of Lumen Gold jewelry in the past. The Lustre Line released new collections twice a year, and she almost always found something she liked. She owned pieces from every collection released in the two years since Janet became director.
She scrutinized Janet carefully. The suit Janet was wearing–Zara had seen it in a boutique just two days ago. It cost nearly two hundred thousand. She had wanted it, but hadn’t been able to bring herself to spend that much.
Zara glanced down at her own outfit. Thank god I didn’t buy it, she thought. Matching with the boss on day one would be…
Janet swept a cold glance over the two gossiping employees, then scanned the room with a piercing gaze. “Where is the new hire? Am I supposed to wait for her?”
Zara was standing slightly behind the automatic doors, partially hidden by a potted plant.
Hearing herself summoned, she quickly took a few steps forward and blurted out without a filter, “I’m
here! No need to wait.”
The staff, who had been burying their heads in work to avoid Janet’s wrath, all gasped in unison at Zara’s
words.
This newbie had guts! Talking to Janet like that?
Did she really have powerful backing?
Zara, habitually carefree, hadn’t adjusted to the office dynamic yet. Realizing her attitude was off, she quickly straightened up, looking awkward, and lowered her head like the others.
Seeing Zara’s demeanor, a flicker of disdain appeared in Janet’s aloof eyes.

Chapter 588 Task
She hadn’t wanted to accept a parachuted hire at all.

But when headquarters sent word that the new chairman herself had requested it, Janet’s contempt only deepened.
New chairman? What a joke.
Just a shallow woman climbing the ladder by clinging to a man and using a pregnancy as leverage. If she hadn’t lucked out and carried the seed of the Caldwell family’s second son, an outsider like her wouldn’t have the right to dictate anything here.
And now, looking at Zara’s improper stance–a nepotism hire daring to wear a suit from the same brand as hers?
She doesn’t even look in the mirror to see if she’s worthy.
Janet didn’t bother saving face for Zara. Across the entire open office space, her voice rang out, cold and cutting. “The design department doesn’t harbor useless people. I don’t care which Caldwell you’re related to. If you don’t produce something that satisfies me within a month, get out of my department!”
Zara held her breath. Just as she was about to respond, Janet glanced at her wristwatch and spoke again, her tone even harsher.
“You are fifteen seconds late. Someone with such a poor concept of time isn’t qualified to be a designer; you aren’t even qualified to sweep the floors.”
Janet lifted her chin. “You came in through the back door and you still can’t follow the rules. That is a slap in the face to every designer here who got in on merit. If I don’t discipline you, no one will respect you.”
As her words fell, Zara felt dozens of gazes pinning her to the spot like needles.
Zara admired Janet’s design talent, but she hadn’t expected the woman’s mouth to be a weapon.
Before Zara could even say a word, Janet had reduced her to nothing, labeled her a nepo baby, and turned the entire room against her.
Even if it was true…
Zara closed her eyes, swallowing her anger. “Ms. Cohen, how do you want to punish me? I’ll do it.”
“From your tone, it sounds like you’re unhappy about it.”
Janet sneered. “There are sixty–four designers in this department. Go to each one, introduce yourself, learn their coffee preferences, and buy everyone à coffee as an apology.
“I want you back here, task complete, in one hour.”
Zara rolled her eyes, unable to stop herself this time. “One hour? That’s impossible. Just making the drinks takes longer than that, let alone getting everyone’s order and waiting for the elevators. It can’t be done.”
