Chapter 587 Connections
In the blink of an eye, Zara’s first day of work arrived.

Having grown accustomed to sleeping in, she had dragged herself out of bed uncharacteristically early. Yawning continuously, she shuffled downstairs to breakfast, only to zone out after two bites, her head drooping dangerously close to her plate.
Noah and Niamh watched her, hearts aching with sympathy.
“Alivia, Zara hasn’t rested enough. Help her back upstairs to sleep.”
Zara jolted awake instantly. “No! I have to go to work! I’m not tired!”
She had tried to adjust her sleep schedule a day early.
But the excitement of her first “real” job–and in jewelry design, her childhood dream no less–had kept her wide awake until the early hours of the morning.
Noah frowned, disapproving. “Look at the dark circles under your eyes; they’re practically purple. Just take the day off. Going in one day late won’t matter.”
“I can’t do that.”
Zara grabbed a slice of toast, clamped it between her teeth, and scrambled up to leave. “People are already going to talk because I didn’t go through the interview process. If I don’t even show up on the first day, who knows what they’ll say?
“Don’t worry. I’ll take care of myself. I’m off!”
Zara waved and scurried out the door.
Noah quickly shouted for the butler and staff to see her out safely.
Turning back, his face fell as he glared at Kenny, who was still sitting there like a sulky lump. “Eat, eat, eat. Is that all you know how to do? Your wife just left. What are you still doing here?”
Kenny’s mouth twitched violently. “Seriously, Grandpa? That’s unreasonable. She’s the one who couldn’t sit still and wanted to go to the office. I’m not going.”
“You’re comfortable letting Zara go to work alone?”
Kenny didn’t hesitate. “Yep. Totally.”
The words barely left his mouth before a piece of pan–seared salmon came flying at him. Kenny opened his mouth wide and caught it.
Noah slammed the table. “Haven’t you heard of ‘husband and wife, together in strife‘? Get your act together! You haven’t touched any company business since you got back from abroad. Now is the perfect time!”

Seeing Noah was serious, and wanting Kenny to start getting involved in the business anyway, Niamh gave him a nudge. “Kenny, go on. You don’t have to follow Zara around, but at least be in the building to hold down the fort. Make sure nothing happens to her.”
Kenny looked reluctant on the surface, but inwardly, something shifted.
“So annoying. She’s dragging the whole family into her mess.”
Grumbling complaints, Kenny nevertheless stood up and headed for the door.
Watching his grandson’s pathetic display, Noah turned to Niamh and grumbled, “Look at that boy. He clearly wanted to go. Otherwise, why would he be up this early if he wasn’t going to work? The nerve of him to blame us. He’s all talk.”
Niamh called out to a servant. “Pack up the food the kitchen prepared and give it to Kenny. Make sure he delivers it to Zara personally.”
In the heart of Jindiwood, three needle–like towers pierced the clouds, standing side by side, their steel and glass facades reflecting the cold gleam of the spring sun.
These were the headquarters for the Caldwell Group’s three major jewelry brands. In the center stood Lumen Gold, the brand that had launched the Caldwell jewelry empire.
Clutching her phone with the reporting instructions, Zara took the elevator up to the 36th floor, home of the design department.
Just as she stepped into the lobby, she caught the faint murmur of gossip. Zara’s ears perked up instantly.
“I heard a newbie is parachuting into our department. It’s already this late; why aren’t they here yet? Playing big shot on day one?”
“No way. Who has that kind of pull? I’ve been here five years, and this is the first time we’ve had a new hire outside of recruitment season.”
“Who knows? But honestly, compared to the new hire, the sudden change in chairman is way weirder. Do you think the Caldwell Group is giving up on our brand? Why else would they let an outsider run it?”
“Pfft, who cares? For the Group, it’s just moving money from the left pocket to the right. Sure, they put Mrs. Caldwell’s name on the chairman’s door, but I heard that once she pops out that baby, she used to secure her position, the shares go straight to the kid. She only gets to play boss for a few months. Even if she wanted to manage things, it’s not like an outsider with a different last name would ever get a real say.”
“Oh? So that’s how it is. You really know everything, Luisa. You’ve got the inside scoop on all the Caldwell
secrets.”
“I just heard it from our director, Ms. Cohen. She’s got connections higher up.”
