Chapter 10
Chloe’s POV
Hannah stood in front of the traveling party with a smile of satisfaction on her face as Luna Diane introduced her to everyone as the leader of the food distribution expedition.
Simple reason: she had been the first to turn in her work.
I understood Luna Diane was trying to reward competence. But she had not even asked us any questions about the report that we had written.
Just took our words for it.
As much as I wanted to call to light how unfair the situation was, putting someone who had no idea what we were doing in charge, there was no easy way to call the Luna of the pack careless.
Both of us were not at the point yet where I could bring matters like this to her attention. If she got even slightly offended or had someone like Alpha Paul get offended on my behalf, it was over for me.
Especially after the whole mess Hannah caused at her party, our family was skating on thin ice.
“Thank you for having me,” Hannah said, her sweet girl next-door facade already up. “I promise to make sure that this expedition to the border goes as smoothly as possible.”
As we dispersed to do our final checks, Luna Diane walked to me with Hannah.
“Chloe, I want you to serve as assistant leader to Hannah,” she said.
I looked between her face and Hannah’s.
If I could not override any of Hannah’s potentially dangerous or misinformed commands, what then was the point of the title?
To be seen as an over glorified maid?
“Yes, Luna,” I said, unable to protest.
The journey to the border took half a day. Hannah rode in the chief inspector’s car upfront while I could only manage with the cargo in one of the middle cars, bearing with the hot sun.
The trucks eventually pulled up at the border. The sight made my heart twist.
Rows and rows of broken tents as far as the eyes could see. Those flimsy pieces of clothing could definitely not survive the rain and the sun.
Had this been how these people had been living all this while?
Hannah instantly sprang into action, yelling orders before anyone had had a moment to breathe.
“Set up the distribution tent and have the refugees come into straight lines to register and receive aid.”
Hearing her voice, the refugees started coming slowly out of their tents. Seeing the stacks of boxes, they started to jump in joy, yelling Hannah’s praises.
“She is a saint.”
“We finally have food to eat.”

“Oh, thank you for taking the time to bring us supplies.”
Hannah settled into her chair, wearing a proud smile. “Of course, it is my duty as a member of the Alpha family. Just line up and you will receive a box for yourself.”
As she spoke, I could feel Hannah’s gaze on me. There were a lot of times I could spare for an argument but this was not one of them.
That desperation that they used to run to the lines for food…what on Earth was happening beyond the borders?
We had unloaded half of the supplies when Hannah’s shrill scream filled the air. I turned around in time to see her kick an old man at her feet away.
He soared a few feet in the air and fell but did not stir. His lips were cracked, his entire face hollow.
Oh goddess. Had he starved to death?
I rushed towards him and raised him up, checking for breaths in his nostrils.
Good. He was still alive.
“Bring me water,” I said to some of the men near me. They remained rooted in their spot, glancing at Hannah for permission. “Fucking hell! Bring me water!”
One of the younger men moved and brought a bottle of our water. The rest of them made no effort to help.
Luna Chloe making me assistant leader was practically for show. I did not have any real authority with these men.
As I lifted the old man, I looked at Hannah. She was still brushing her gown, muttering something about his filthy
hands.
