My eyes fell down to Hannah’s stomach, my entire body trembling.

Pregnant? How could she be pregnant? We were just nineteen and eighteen years old respectively. I could not be a- father right now.

“You were on birth control,” I hissed, trying to avoid the prying ears that were all around us. “You told me that you were on the pill.”

That was the only reason I had ever forsaken condoms. From the very beginning, I had been guarding against this and she went behind my back and stopped taking her pills.

She pouted, her hands rubbing her belly. “But I want to have your baby. I don’t know how it happened but I just checked and saw that I was.” She smiled as she stepped closer. “Jax, you are going to be a daddy.”

Hannah could have chosen anywhere else to make this announcement but as the attention whore that she was, she decided on the dining room in the middle of dinner. Now, I could not tell her to get rid of it without sounding like a heartless bastard.

“I suppose congratulations are in order,” I heard behind me and my spine stiffened.

Chloe stepped out of the hallway with Axel, both of them wearing cheeky smiles as they walked to the table. As always, when I saw Chloe, my heart swelled with something warm.

I did not know how I had never noticed but she was undeniably beautiful. Then, there were the different dealings that she had with my father and Moonflame.

There were rumours circulating about how much she has as her personal wealth, separate from her parents and my brother. As crazy as the figures sounded, I could believe it. She seemed that capable to me.

No matter what Dad has said to try to cover it up, I also knew that she had been the one to take care of the Crane family, securing Axel’s position as the heir like never before.

If I had not been so distracted by Hannah back then, Chloe would have been my mate in a few months. I could only imagine the impact of all her resources behind me if I tried to contest for the Alpha position.

“Jax,” Hannah whined, drawing my attention back to her.

I looked at her with intense irritation. My frustration with her was very evident on my face but she was not bothered in the slightest, pressing herself closer to me.

“You have an heir,” she said again, blinking up at me through her lashes. Goddess, when she started acting like this, I could never resist her.

This was the main reason I had agreed to her decision to mate with me. Hannah was good sex on legs and she had never disappointed me under the sheets.

My hand had slipped down her body when I heard a giggle behind me, snapping me out of my haze of lust. I turned and saw Axel whispering something to Chloe and she had her head thrown back as she laughed.

Perhaps realizing that she was being disrespectful, her hand flew over her mouth as she tried to stifle the laughter. Axel said something again and she doubled over, nearly falling off her chair and into his arms. Axel caught her, his eyes shining as he watched her.

Axel sensed my gaze and looked up at me, his brow lifting. It did not take him three seconds to realize that it was actually Chloe that I was staring at.

His eyes went cold, his wolf brimming on the surface, daring me to attempt any of the thoughts that were living rent-free in my head.

My heart twisted in my chest. When did he become emotionally involved with her? How had I not noticed all this – while?

Hannah always talked non-stop about how Chloe and Axel were making a show for the camera. This did not look anything like that. My brother would never defend a woman like that if he did not care.

Hannah pulled on my hand again. When I looked at her, I saw that she was staring at something over my shoulder. Dad’s scent filled the room.

“Jax, we should go to the hospital to check on the baby,” she declared loudly.

Silence stretched in the room, Dad’s footsteps moving on the ground echoing. “Baby,” Dad said after a few seconds. “You are pregnant.”

Before I could find the words to explain myself, Hannah stepped forward and started rattling on and on about how she was so excited to be a mother. I was then dragged into this when she started to cry in gratitude for my support.

What support?

Did she realize that having a child now would ruin my life?

I just finished high school. I was not sure what I wanted to yet and here she was, dumping a whole pup at my doorstep.

Dad turned to me and nodded. “Congratulations, son.”
