My Stepsister Returned To Rewrite Fate But I Became Luna (Chloe) novel Chapter 117

Chapter 117

Chloe’s POV

Mum sighed and moved to sit on the bed. “Chloe, can we just talk? You are always on guard against me. I am your mother!

Her words almost made me falter. Almost.

But I knew her. With David under scrutiny from the Alpha family, she would not come at this time to me and risk/ his wrath.

After all, if David was punished or worse, stripped of his title, she would be the one who would suffer most in the situation. She should be scrambling around, running helter-skelter looking for who to beg on his behalf.

Even if she could not directly influence the situation, she should be consoling him at the very least or being the object of his anger.

Anything but here, trying to rekindle a bond that she killed with her own hands.

“Come on,” she said. “Sit.”

I walked to the bed and sat beside her. The sooner I indulged her, the sooner she would be out of my hair.

“You…I heard about your new business and all I kept thinking about was that just a few years ago, we were living off bad takeout and expired food,” she started, her eyes glossy.

“Six million dollars,” she said and let out a small chuckle. “Wow. I don’t…I do not even know what to say. It is crazy to even think about it…you made your dreams come true.”

After a lifetime of pain and neglect by people I considered my family.

It was ironic that the moment I stopped caring about these foolish family ties and trying to please anyone, I started to truly live my life.

I had never had more freedom in this one year of being Axel’s contract fiancee as I had in my ten years married to Jax. My happiness in my past life and this one were almost night and day.

“Do you know what you want to do with your money?” she asked.

I remained silent for a moment, thinking about her question before choosing to answer honestly. “Travel, maybe. I have always wanted to see the world…try out new foods. Go to new schools.”

Do everything that I never got the chance to do in my past life because I was busy running a pack that did not care for me and my wellbeing.

“Travel,” she muttered. “How much of that will you get to do when you are Luna?”

I did not answer that question. It was why I did not want to be Luna in the first place.

The title was restrictive and had so many conservative expectations. Silence that they called gentleness. Passiveness that they called refinement.

It was like once you became a Luna, they wanted you to forsake your brains for anything beyond managing welfare and your husband’s interpersonal relations.

That was one of the reasons I admired Luna Silvia so much. She shattered all ideologies of what a Luna should be by being the face of Moonflame and Alpha David threw all his support behind her.

Everdeen was not ready for a Luna like her and I refused to be the Luna I once was in my past.

Reople are starting to spread rumours in the pack that you want to leave Axel, is that true?”

Her voice was suddenly serious, panic on her face like she was thinking of the words she would say that would convince me.

“I do not see how that is any of your business,” I said calmly. “You no longer have a legal responsibility over me, which is to say, it is none of your business if I live or die.”

“Are you crazy?” she hissed, grabbing onto my shoulders. Her eyes had shifted from panicked to manic.

“You were able to bag the future Alpha and you want to leave him?! You think opportunities like this come twice?”

Her grip did not hurt at all. Yes, she was a wolf but since she joined Everdeen, she had stopped fighting for herself and had slowly let go of that quiet strength that I always admired that she had when she fought tooth and nail to raise me as a child.

I could no longer recognize her.

“Do you think I need a man to tell me how to live my life?” I said, brushing her hands off. “I do not want to end up as pathetic as you-”

I saw the slap before it arrived but I let it land. It was the last bit of respect I owed her for all the years she had suffered to raise me.

“Don’t you dare speak to me like that,” she snarled. “Your father has taken good care of you all these years and this is how you repay him? By telling lies about him to Alpha Paul?!”

Finally, she had revealed her true intentions for coming here.

The only time she cared about me was when David cared about me and the only time David cared was when he wanted to exploit me.

I got to my feet, letting my wolf heal the bruise marks on my face. I did not care if she saw.
