Chapter 123
Axel’s POV
Chloe remained quietly in my office until it was nighttime.
Seeing she was a bit more compliant, I casually suggested that we go on a walk and she agreed without hesitation, almost absentmindedly.
As we walked, I even tried to include her in conversation but she only gave me half-hearted answers or hums. At first, it was annoying. Now, it had become worrisome.
I stopped walking and clamped my hand down on her shoulder. She jumped and looked back at me with wide eyes. “Finally, you are paying attention,” I said.
That was when she looked around and realized where I had taken her. Her cheeks flushed brightly and she tried to turn back around but I held her hand, keeping her there.
“Come on, let’s sit. This is your spot, right?” I assumed since I had never seen anyone else at this lake before. I did not think that she had casually wandered into this spot on the night that I met her.
“It is dangerously close to the border. Have you never been injured here except for that one time?” I asked and she nodded, sitting on the grass beside me.
We sat close enough to the water that we could put our feet inside it. She stared at her reflection in the water with a thoughtful expression that I could not really decipher.
“Do you let your wolf out?” I asked her.
She looked up at me and shook her head. “I do not want anyone to see.
“Why not?” I asked her. “You would become a legend in the wolf world for shifting before you were eighteen. There are very few cases in history where that has happened to someone.”
It was even more common to see people who could not shift until later years than to meet someone who shifted before they were an adult.
Most of the people who that happened to were raised in the wild, around actual wolves and got in tune with their wolf half much earlier on. To think there was such a genius in Everton, hiding in plain sight.
Her family members were really foolish to let a gem like her go in order to favor her greedy swine of her sister. Just thinking about this afternoon’s incident made me upset again,
Chloe may have gone overboard with the acting but Hannah was clearly in the wrong. From the beginning, she had been trying to paint Chloe with the reputation of consistently harming a pregnant woman.
We had barely escaped Father’s judgment for the last matter and Hannah was not satisfied and decided to pull this stunt as well. Next time, I would not let it go at a pair of earrings.
“I want to live a quiet life,” Chloe whispered. “Genius who shifts at seventeen is not a quiet life. My wolf understands so we are simply bidding our time.”
Her wolf understands?
I looked down at her wrist. The red swelling had mostly gone down but it was still very visible to show that she had been hurt.
Chloe had excellent control over her wolf and how to utilize its abilities.

Not many wolves could slow or stop their wolf’s abilities simply because they wished for it. Even me would have
fficulty doing it as easily as she did it and I was guessing that she did not realize this.
Her mind. Her body. Her wolf. She was very gifted all around. It made me want to investigate who her biological father is.
Her mother was largely average so the extra-ordinary abilities that Chloe had would come from her father. Yes, we all knew he was from some high-ranking family but how high up were we talking?
Another Alpha? Maybe even higher?
A low chuckle slipped from my lips. Perhaps after finding out who he was, Chloe’s reasoning for wanting to leave the pack would be turned on its head.
It would no longer be that she thinks she is not good enough for me. I might be the one not good enough for her!
“That time will soon be up,” I reminded her though she had certainly not forgotten.
She let out a small laugh. “Thank you, genius for the apt reminder. Do you want a prize?”
I shuffled closer to her side. “How about that second date that you promised me? The least you can do is fulfill your promises, right?”
Chloe gave me a look like she was thinking of how to hurt me. Suddenly, she pulled her legs out of the water and faced me. “What is it you like about me?”
My mouth fell open at the blunt question. “W-What?”
“You told me that you did not want me to leave. What is it that you like about me that you want me to stay so bad? My money? My presence? Do you just need a trophy wife?”
