Chapter 124
Chloe’s POV
Axel looked confused by my question. “What?”
“Windsor Industries,” I repeated casually. All I had been thinking all evening was how to bring it up without sounding like I was digging into his personal business.
Hopefully, by trying to play it off as casual, he might answer me.
“I heard you and Tony talking about it this afternoon. I thought they were in some kind of feud with Everton. I saw it in a file in the archives.”
Why was he not saying anything? Was I giving away too much?
“There was a disagreement in the mode of operations a while ago and it did become a legal battle but it was not so serious that I would call it a feud,” Axel finally said but his expression remained concerned, probably wondering which document I had seen to make me believe what I did.
“It happened long ago when I was a child…Perhaps I might not have known how serious the matter was back then?”
I nodded slowly. “It is possible.”
After all, a minor disagreement like that would not have warranted ending Axel’s life like that. My fists tightened slightly as I thought about Axel dying.
He was so strong, stronger than most Alphas and their heirs that I knew. How could he just die like that, because of an ordinary fire?
There was no way that was going to happen in this life, right? My presence in his life now had already changed so
much in this timeline.
Even this conversation was cementing further doubt in his mind so he would definitely go back to do his research into the company before committing to them fully.
But what if…?
“Axel,” I said firmly. “The way Tony spoke this afternoon. I have a bad feeling about this. It is just a gut feeling but it is better to be safe than sorry. Just check it out. There is no harm in…”
His hand closed over mine, causing my words to trail off. I looked up at his face to see him watching me with a small smile. “I have already told people to look into it. Thank you for worrying about me.”
“I wasn’t…” His grin stretched wider at my attempt to deny it. I let out a small scoff and turned my head away from him. “Childish. You had better not get yourself killed. Jax and Hannah will drive this pack straight into the ground.”
Axel laughed and then shook his head. “Tell me about it. Father has a headache thinking about it sometimes. He wants to give Jax a chance but Jax is so irresponsible that it is hard to think about relying on him.”
“Poor Hannah. Getting pregnant for a guy like that,” I said and Axel nudged my arm.
“You do not look sorry for her in the slightest,” he said, gesturing to the smirk on my face. I rolled my eyes, wanting to kick him away.
Why should I feel sorry for her? She chose her life for herself.

Axel’s smile dimmed slightly. “To think you would have married Jax,” he muttered, his expression twisting to
e of discomfort. “Goddess. I cannot even imagine what that would be like.”
I hummed but did not say anything. If I opened my mouth then, I might have blurted something that I did not need to say.
“What is the Alpha meet like?” I asked Axel. At this point, I could not guarantee getting my permission to leave from Alpha Paul anytime soon.
If he refused, I had no problems waiting until I formally turned eighteen since the date was not too far away. He would not be able to stop me then.
Until that time, I could enjoy the last few days I had to spend in Everton, which would be at the Alpha meet. Onde Axel and I got back, it would be my birthday a few days later.
“It’s just young Alphas coming with their future Lunas to try and one-up each other,” Axel said casually like he had not just described a political battlefield in one sentence.
I could already imagine what it would be like: hormonal teenagers and people in their twenties all in one place competing for superiority. The drama would be off-the-charts.
“I also heard that the royal family will be coming this time,” Axel said and leaned back on the floor of the forest beside me. He then turned on his side to look at my face.
“His heir has been kept secret all this while and they might reveal him this year. It’s a rumor though.”
