My Stepsister Returned To Rewrite Fate But I Became Luna (Chloe) novel Chapter 129

Chapter 129

Chloe’s POV

Dinner was on the verge of a disaster. We had barely sat down around the table before Axel and Darius started arguing.

It had been industry jargon at first and suddenly, the conversation had shifted to me and why Moonflame should be the official licensor of my talent.

Not the pill. My talent. Like my person as a whole was a commodity for sale.

As they went back and forth, I sat beside Axel, trying to swallow the steak that I was sure was delicious but it only tasted like sandpaper. I had to use the water to swallow it.

“Your people refused to acknowledge her until she started bringing wealth and honor to your pack,” Darius/said ” You clearly do not care for her as a person.”

“You have no place as an outsider to come on that, Alpha,” Axel retorted snarkily. “As I am told, you have a mate. I am sure she is a lovely woman.”

“What does that have to do with making an investment in talent for the generations-”

I interrupted him by slamming down my fork on the plate. All eyes turned to me. I stood up abruptly, quickly enough for my chair to be thrown back.

The sound of it falling echoed in the dining room. Picking up the napkin to dab my lips, I said, “I should get to bed. We have a long journey ahead of us tomorrow.”

Without waiting for anyone’s words, I walked upstairs to the room I had slept in the last time I visited here. The bed was already laid with my suitcases arranged neatly in the corner.

I sat back on the bed and opened my tablet, scrolling through to find a movie to distract me. Mara had bought this tablet particularly to d******d movies for me so I would not be bored on the journey.

I eventually settled on some plotless cartoon series and started to watch it. Halfway through the first episode, the door opened and Riven appeared in the doorway with a tub of ice cream in her arms.

“Hey,” she whispered and sat down beside me. “What are you watching?”

Without a word, I turned the screen towards her and made space on the bed so the both of us could watch at the

same time.

We stayed in that comfortable silence, sharing the ice cream until I finally asked. “Should you not be with your mate?”

“If he is going to be an ass, he can go hug a tree,” she replied, her grip tightening momentarily around her fork.

I turned to her and saw that she was completely serious. My lips pursed as I contemplated whether to ask my question or not.

“What is it like to have a real mate? The Goddess’ bond? What is that like?”

Riven paused and then, her eyes softened. She did not need to say anything for me to understand what she was feeling.

I nodded, gulping slightly. Would I ever get to find my real mate? Did I even want a real mate?

Having a real mate came with no guarantee that you would be treated right. If anything, it was easier to be trapped

an unfavorable position with a man simply because the Goddess’ bond is so strong.

“I mean, Darius is great and all…he can just be a bit of a jerk sometimes. He does not know when to shut up.” She nudged me. “What about your man? I hear he is quite a gentleman.”

I rolled my eyes. “He is not that much of a jerk really. I just don’t like him…sometimes…”

Riven nodded, humming. “So he does not have any major faults? What of the minor stuff? He smells? He snores? Eats too loudly? Does not open the car door for you?”

She continued on rattling different possible negative things that a guy could have and with chilling certainty, I realized that Axel had none of the faults she spoke about.

“So you want to tell me that besides being a little quiet, he is actually perfect…and he is that hot?” Riven asked.

“I did not say he was perfect,” I defended. “I just…I…”

Now that I really wanted to, I could not think of Axel having any negative traits. He was protective, sweet, gentle when he needed to be, defended me without thinking and supported me without asking questions.

That was more than men twice his age who had been married for their decades could do for their partners.
