Chloe’s POV

Luna Silvia had been kind enough to provide us with multiple vehicles for the road. Three different SUVS.

Hannah and Jax were in one. Darius, Riven and Sandra in the second. Leaving Axel and me in the third one.

As the car drove, Axel and I sat on opposite sides of the car, facing the window while actively trying to pretend that the other person was not there.

If either of us paid too much attention to the other, we would remember the kiss or, more accurately, the almost kiss. It was the last thing I wanted to think about right now.

“Are you hungry?” he asked, a few hours into the journey.

I stirred in my seat, trying to find a position that did not make my neck cramp. Suddenly, Axel’s arm passed over

My breath caught in my throat as he lowered the back of my chair so I could recline in the seat.

Then, his eyes slid from the chair to mine. “Are you hungry?” he asked again.

My eyes fell to his lips against my better judgment. Axel truly was a very handsome man.

I had had the opportunity to be around men from very noble families in my past life and I had hardly ever met many men who were as attractive as Axel.

His looks sometimes made me want to throw everything to the wind and just ride the waves of a relationship with him, however casual.

Axel’s hand lifted and cupped my face. “Chloe,” he whispered, moving closer, his lips hovering over mine.

My eyes fluttered shut. It was just one kiss.

I would curse myself later if I left and never got to taste him in the slightest.

Just as our lips brushed, the door of the van opened. Sandra stood in the doorway with wide eyes, her hand stretching a pack of fries into the car.

“I am so sorry,” she whispered and tried to backtrack but it was already too late.

The atmosphere was more than ruined; it was completely shattered. Axel straightened and returned to his seat.

His head fell against the leather and he let out an annoyed sigh, running his hands through his hair.

I sat up, gulping to retain my composure. “Is there… is there a problem? What is it?”

Sandra could no longer meet my eyes. “I actually came to give you this. You did not eat before we left home so I figured you might be hungry.”

She pointed to the others behind her. “Everyone stopped for a snack break. Since the driver stopped your car as well, I thought you guys were coming down too…I am so sorry.”

I shook my head, hiding my trembling hands behind my back. “It’s alright,” I said, trying to control myself and the desire to slam the door and climb into Axel’s lap.

The scent of my arousal must have leaked because Axel’s gaze snapped to mine, his nose flaring once. He opened

“Where did you run off to?” I asked first, trying to be casual.

Axel smiled, cupping my cheek in both hands. “I ran off to calm down so you will not be the death of me, Chloe. You drive me insane.”

The girls started squealing to my right like he had just made the love declaration of the century.

I held both his wrists and pulled his hand from my face. “Aren’t you guys almost done eating? We should get back on the road soon. We need to reach our destination by nightfall.”

Before the girls could say anything else, I took the food in their hands and returned to the SUV. Axel got in a moment later, wearing a cheeky smile on his face.

We were both silent for the rest of the ride. That was, until the atmosphere suddenly shifted.

At first, it started like a dull ache spreading up my arms and then, the pain seized my entire body in a split second.
