Chapter 133
Chloe’s POV
When I came back to my consciousness, I was on a bed in a very luxurious room, more grand than anything I had
ever seen.
As I struggled to sit up, someone spoke to my left. “Take it easy. You had a pretty hard fall when you passed out.”
When I passed out?”
I rubbed the side of my head, trying to remember and then failed. Suddenly, I sucked in a sharp breath and replayed the voice I had just heard.
My head snapped to my right to see Liam casually seated in the chair beside my bed, peeling oranges. When he saw the look on my face, he grinned.
“I was probably the last person you thought you would see, huh?”
I was about to reply to his words and then remembered that this was the young Alphas meet. Though I did not know whose son Liam was, I could infer that he was an Alpha.
It should not be surprising that he was here.
“Where is Axel?” I asked.
Liam’s hand holding the knife paused for a moment. “In a meeting,” Liam said sharply and returned to his peeling more aggressively. “Do not think about him.”
His tone made me suspicious. Somehow, I was certain that Axel would not willingly abandon me in a bedroom with a largely unfamiliar man in a strange territory.
He already guarded me like an egg within his own territory, Everdeen.
There was something wrong.
“Liam, where is Axel?” I repeated, my voice tighter.
Liam slammed the orange down so hard on the plate that the plate shattered. His anger burst before he could control it.
“Why do you care so much about him anyway? Was your entire relationship not built on you planning to leave him?!”
My entire body stiffened. I had never told anyone about my arrangement with Axel. Ever.
I doubted Axel would have either. There was only one place where it was documented and it was on our contract and the single copy of the contract was with me.
My hands curled into fists on my sheets. “You had me investigated,” I hissed.
Liam flinched, breaking eye contact. “I just wanted to make sure you were okay. You cannot phrase it like that.”
“Did you have me investigated or not?”
Liam grew even more uncomfortable over my questioning. He rubbed his arms nervously. “I refuse to apologize. If I had the chance, I would do it again.”

A small chuckle slipped from my lips. “Alright. Thank you for your honesty.”

gathered my strength to try and climb out of the bed. Liam tried to help me but I shoved his hand off of me. “Do not,” I said curtly.
He stepped back but his hands remained outstretched in front of him. His brows were scrunched in concern but he remained stubborn in his stance.
“Chloe, you cannot really be angry at me because of something like this. It was not like I did any serious harm. I just wanted to know if he was treating you well.”
My brow raised. “And what was your conclusion?”
His shoulders slacked. “Chloe, you do not need to be sarcastic with me. You’re mad for some reason but if you insist on him, we can figure something out, I guess-”
“And who do you think you are, Liam, to have such a say in my life?” I spat.
He paused, searched my face and then burst into a nervous chuckle. “Chloe, you seriously cannot be looking at me like that. You know the way they treated you at the beginning. The stories have carried this far and reached my ears
“And I ask you, Liam,” I took a step closer to him. “Who do you think you are to have a say in my life?”
His mouth fell shut as he tried to find an answer. I wanted to stay there even longer and badger him but finding Axel was more urgent.
Liam’s family was evidently more powerful than Everdeen. They could have done something to Axel during the time that I was asleep.
I followed Axel sent to a set of two large mahogany doors. With much strength, I heaved open one of the doors to create a crack that I was able to slip through.
Axel sat on the bed, his back hunched, staring into a few papers in a file. He was so engrossed in whatever he was looking at that he did not look up.
“Axel,” I said and he hummed.
I sat beside him, looking over his shoulder at the file he was reading. It looked to be someone’s profile.
The longer I read, the more my eyes widened. “The Alpha King’s daughter?” I whispered and looked at Axel. ” Why do you have this? Don’t tell me you did an investigation into him.”
What was it with these foolish men thinking everything was their business? One day, all of their snooping was going to get someone killed.
“I did not dig into his business. He gave the file to me,” Axel said calmly, rereading the page for the third time.
I shuffled closer. “The Alpha King? He gave it to you?”
