Chloe’s POV

Axel and I sat in silence for a long time.

The longer I thought about it, the less it made sense to me.

The Alpha King. How could it be the Alpha King of all people. All I had been told was that my father was of a special pack.

How did a special pack suddenly become royalty?

There was a knock on the door and Axel and I turned our heads towards the sound.

“Who is it?” Axel asked.

A maid opened the door and stepped in. “His Majesty would have you both down for dinner. Miss Chloe’s favorites are spread on the table.”

Axel waved her off and turned to me. He was already getting off the bed. “Do you want to go?” he asked me.

“You’re going, aren’t you?” I retorted, annoyance spreading in my chest for some reason.

“I am a subject of the kingdom. You are his daughter. If I refuse his invitation, he could kill me. You, on the other hand-”

“I get it,” I said, hating every word he had just said no matter how true it was.

I was used to being treated like scum, even by the woman who had given birth to me. Now, I was being given princess treatment.

It felt strange, like I was wearing someone else’s skin. There really had to be some kind of mistake.

“I’m coming with you,” I said and held his hand. I could not tell what was going through his head and I was not sure if I wanted to.

At the end of the long hallway, I caught Riven and Sandra standing together. When they saw me, their eyes lit up and they tried to run towards me but they were instantly blocked.

Two men had practically materialized from the walls and stopped them from coming towards me. “You do not approach the Princess without being told to,” one of the men said.

My jaw clenched and I stomped to the guards, pulling them out of the way. “They came with me. They are my friends.”

The guards glanced at each other but remained in their position, close to us like Riven and Sandra were a threat.

“Chloe, it’s fine,” Sandra started but I interrupted.

“No, it is not fine,” I snapped. “Who the hell do they think they are to tell me who can and cannot be around me.”

The maid’s eyes sharpened. “Miss Chloe, you are a princess. Comport yourself—”

“One more word scolding me and I will rip out your tongue myself,” I snapped and the maid fell silent, bowing

her head.

I turned to Axel, tears brimming in my eyes. I almost could not breathe properly in this place.

I kept my face blank so he would not be able to read any emotions on my face but I could not quickly dispose of the tears in my eyes.

“Who made you cry?” he asked and without waiting for my response, immediately turned on Axel.

“You did this, did you not?”

He crossed the distance between them in a split second and was about to hit Axel but I screamed. “Do not touch him!”
