Chapter 135
Chloe’s POV
“Chloe,” the king called behind me.
I gulped and cleared my throat. “Your Majesty, my apologies for my outburst. I should not have-”
“Do you really consider your own father such a tyrant?” the King said and held my shoulders.
Slowly, he turned me around to face him. The look on his face made my lips part in a small gasp.
His brows were scrunched in deep concern and sadness. His fingers moved to my hair, still short but longer than it was months ago.
Rather than stopping right below my ear, it now flared around my shoulders.
“You used to love your hair so much. Why did you cut it?” he whispered. “Your skin is far too pale too. Do you go out in the sun at all? You used to love running so much.”
I could only stare at him as he spoke of a childhood I did not remember.
“That look in your eyes. Something happened to you. Where is your mother? Is she still alive?”
I squirmed in discomfort at that last question.
Before now, I had no idea why he was not a part of my childhood but now, I could understand that I was an illegitimate child.
There was no way a random wolf with no flashy background like my mother would have been able to marry someone from the royal family.
Even us marrying the Beta of Everdeen was seen as a massive social climb.
Now, I was wondering if the king loved my mother and had us sent away to protect us from the royal family. Being an illegitimate child could not possibly be a favorable lifestyle.
“Where is your queen?” I asked bluntly.
The King broke eye contact for a moment. “She wants to meet you.”
There it was.
The real queen of the kingdom would not be able to stand me. Because of that, the king must not have even bothered investigating the whereabouts of my mother and me, so he would not offend her.
“I am not here to cause problems,” I said calmly, stepping out of his reach. “I only came here for the Alpha meet with my mate and a few friends. If she does not want me here”
“My mother is magnanimous,” a voice said to our left.
Liam was walking towards us in an outfit that made him look like the royalty that he was.
A chill spread in my chest when I realized that Liam was older than me, at least a year older than me.
He was already born when my mother got pregnant with me, The king cheated on his mother with mine.
My hands curled into fists at my side.

Had he known before now? I could not imagine that Liam would look at me and not realize that I was very identical to his father.
With his investigation skills, finding out the truth would have been as easy as waving a hand.
“Y-Your Highness,” I said and tried to bow but I felt Liam’s finger lift my head up.
Instantly, he pulled me into a hug, grinning from ear to ear. “I have been holding it in for years. I wanted to tell you but no one dared to speak about it. I am so glad that we are reunited, sister.”
His enthusiasm was more terrifying than anything.
He continued talking as he led me to the dining room.
The doors opened and I immediately made eye contact with the woman seated beside the head of the table.
“Mother,” Liam greeted happily and rushed us to her side.
When we were a few feet away, I dug my heels into the ground, not wanting to get closer to her.
Liam frowned and tried to move me forward but I resisted him, fighting with my wolf’s strength.
Slowly, the queen got to her feet, her eyes narrowing sharply. “When did you shift? You are still seventeen, are you not?”
“Nine months ago,” I replied.
A small laugh slipped from her lips. “Even Liam was only able to shift a few weeks before his eighteenth birthday.. and you have such fine control over your wolf as well.”
She kept staring at my chest like there was something buried in there. “William’s blood is something else. Even a bastard daughter is born with such strengths.”
The words ‘bastard daughter’ sliced through my chest.
I lowered my head and could not say anything. At least not now.
This was not Everdeen where I could fight with the Alpha or my parents with my words or my wit.
These people were royalty and I was intensely caught off-guard. I have no idea what they are like, much less how to deal with them.
“What is your name?” she asked me.
“Chloe Waterson,” I said.
Her head tilted. “You came here with your mate? Which Alpha heir is he?”
Did she truly not know or was she going somewhere with this?
“Everdeen. Axel Everdeen, the eldest son of Paul and Diane Everdeen.”
