Chapter 14
Chloe’s POV
Mara played with the strands of my hair as we walked through the mall.
“Have you considered growing out your hair?” she mused out loud. “Short hair looks good on you but I cannot help thinking how you would be so much prettier with longer hair.”
Longer hair might look better on me but it was impractical for my lifestyle. When I was younger, I was too busy with college coursework and house chores to have time for a lengthy hair routing.
Now, it was Luna training and errands.
“Maybe later,” I said, not wanting to give her an outright no before steering her attention back to the reason we came to the mall in the first place. “Whar color did you say the dress code was again?”
Mara’s eyes lit up as she started talking about her cousin’s birthday party. “Green. Paula loves green…oh, I think you would look really good in a green dress, Chloe.”
She did not wait for my input as she ran ahead and pulled one of the green dresses off the cloth racks and showed it to me.
It was beautiful, just not something I would wear. Then again, there was my budget…
Why would I spend so much on a dress that I would not be able to wear again?
Mara caught me looking down at the price tag. She picked it up herself and after seeing the number of zeroes on the paper, set it down back on the rack.
“Why don’t we check out other dresses?” Mara offered, linking her arm with mine.
I stared down at where we were joined with a strange feeling swirling in my chest.
Mara was the closest thing to a friend that I had ever had, even in my past life. Because I did not go through high school as slow as my age mates, I never really had friends my age.
Even all the friends I made when I was Luna in my past life were mostly business and political relationships.
I let Mara drag me deeper into the store as she chatted on and on about an argument she had with someone the other day. I could not even remember what it was about but I loved listening to her talk.
“Try this one on,” she said and gave me a dress. It was similar enough to the one we had seen earlier at the
entrance.
It would do for one night.
Before I could take a step, I heard a mocking laugh behind me. “Don’t tell me that is what you plan to wear to the banquet.”
Why was she always everywhere? I had literally asked Mara to take me to the mall farthest from the pack when Mara said that she wanted to go shopping for her cousin’s birthday.
How did Hannah end up here again?
I ignored her and Hannah, unable to stand that, walked to me and snatched the dress from my hand. Seeing the price tag, she burst into laughter again.

“Oh goddess. I cannot believe this.” She wiped stray tears from her eyes as she straightened. “Just two hundred dollars? How embarassing.”
She threw the dress at my face before strutting a few feet away to call the attendant. I caught the dress before it fell to the ground, glaring at her.
The attendant came and greeted her. Hannah brought out a black card from her purse. “Pack that line/up for me. I have somewhere to be in thirty minutes.”
Her tone dripped with arrogance as she tossed the card at the attendant. Glee filled her eyes as the attendant beny to pick it.
It was like years were getting added to her life from just seeing people beneath her.
When the attendant left, Hannah walked slowly to me, her hands joined in front of her as she flaunted the gold on her fingers and wrists.
“Jax loves me so much, you know?” she said, wearing a proud smile. “He just keeps throwing money at me the moment I mention that I need anything.”
Her eyes dropped to the dress in my hand and her smile widened even more.
“Chloe, you do not need to be so upset. Axel is just that kind of guy. What does he know about treating a woman right?”
She was about to leave when her eyes lit up with an idea. Hannah tilted my jaw with her finger.
“Or you know what, for the sake of our sisterly bond, why don’t I give you a dress from one of mine? Of course, that is if you are willing to beg me.”
I slapped her hand away, my face burning in humiliation.
What could I even say? Now that Hannah knew about the price of my dress, so would everyone who would show up for the banquet.
She was going to run her mouth to whoever wanted to hear.
As much as I did not want this to be a part of my first impression on these people, what could I do? It was not like Axel was going to swoop in and buy me a dress.
