Axel’s POV

“Is there something on my face?” I asked.

Tony kept looking from his paperwork to my face. I figured that he had something on his mind but if he kept getting distracted like this, he would not finish the work we had to do before evening.

“The Alpha banquet is in a few days,” he reminded me, leaning forward on the table. Before I could respond, he followed with a question that made me pause. “Does Chloe have a dress?”

I blinked once, twice. I had not even seen her since then.

How would I know if she had a dress?

“Maybe she does not even have the money to buy a dress.

Oh. That was an easy fix.

I returned to my work. “If she needs money for a dress, she can come to me.”

There were funds that Father had saved up for years for whoever my Luna was going to be. More money than Chloe would know what to do with in one year.

“You’re joking,” he said. I looked at his face with a raised brow. Tony was looking at me like I was sick in the head. “You actually think Chloe would come to you for anything?”

My brows scrunched, annoyance swirling in my chest at his tone. What was that supposed to mean?

“No offense but I am pretty sure that Chloe does not think of you as her husband. You have not given her the time of day since you brought her into this house.”

“I am busy,” I retorted. “She understands that—”

“But she is a woman like any other,” he replied instantly. “Just because she is a lot more understanding than most does not mean she will not appreciate your attention.”

He sighed like a weight was rolling off his shoulders. I wondered for how long that he had held in his thoughts.

“If I did to Lucy what you were doing to Chloe, she would probably pack up her things and move back in with her parents.”

We relapsed into silence but his words did not leave my mind for the next few hours.

Was he right? Was there a way I should be acting towards Chloe?

I knew she would not appreciate it if I became affectionate all of a sudden. To protect herself, she had brought up the idea of us signing a contract so we were both on the same page.

Yes. There was nothing to agonize about. She would be fine as long as we stay out of each other’s ways.

Yet, my feet carried me upstairs after dinner time. The time when I knew that Chloe would be studying in her bedroom.

However, unlike the quiet that I was used to on the Alpha floor, there was hushed yelling, back and forth.

They were so engrossed in what was happening that they did not notice me coming.

“What is going on?” I asked.

The Beta couple flinched, trying to force smiles onto their faces.

“Alpha Axel,” Sophia said. “When did you get here?”

I looked between them, trying to deduce what was going on and failing. “Where is Chloe?” I asked

The couple sent each other sharp glances and then David stepped forward. “She had a long day so we thought she should rest early for a change.”

I did not know much about their family but I knew enough to know that David did not care for Chloe as he pretended to. Hannah was clearly the favored daughter in their family.

David was standing in front of the door, trying to subtly block my entrance.

My gaze was sharp. “Move. I want to see my Luna.”
