Chapter 142

Chloe’s POV

Hannah’s face went through multiple emotions in seconds.

Finally, she decided on anger. Her hands clenched into tight fists as she took a step forward. “How dare you-

Jax pulled her back, cutting her off before she could say more. “That’s enough, Hannah.”

He turned to me with a nervous smile. “Chloe, ignore her. She just says whatever she wants to sometimes. I promise that it is nothing personal.”

A snort slipped from my lips before I could help it.

Jax really was an expert gaslighter. Even a manipulator like Hannah could fall prey to him.

As Hannah was still stuttering, trying to figure out what to say in response, Jax steered her inside the guest house. “You need to eat on time. The baby needs nourishment.”

Darius stared after them as they went, then he turned to Axel and I. “Hey, should you two not get to working on a kid soon?”

I visibly flinched back, utterly disgusted by the idea of having a child before I was in my twenties. Axel too looked uncomfortable by the question.

“I am just twenty-one,” he muttered. “There is no need to rush.”

There was a loud snort behind us. Axel and I turned around to see a pair of identical twins standing a few feet away, laughing to themselves.

“Come on,” the one on the right started loudly. “What kind of Alpha would want some fatherless nobody to have their child?”

“Honestly! Look at how small she is too,” the one on the left replied. “I’m pretty sure that he would probably keep a good woman on the side to carry his children.”

Axel was furious, about to move in the direction of the men but I held his arm.

Without looking at the twins, I said, “Have you ever met those kinds of guys whose dicks are so small that they have to get off on insulting girls because no one would sleep with them?”

Sandra spat out the water she had been drinking, disguising her laughter with a cough. Even the usually stoic Darius had an amused glint in his eyes.

Riven, ever the homegirl, joined in. “Yeah. I dated one like that way back before I shifted. Turns out most of them have a degradation kink-”

“You little bitch! Say that again!”

I turned around fully like I was just noticing them there. “Oh, hello. Are you referring to us? Axel, do you know them?”

When Axel crossed his arms over his chest, his wolf dangerously close to the surface, the twins gulped, taking a

step backwards.

“W-We were not talking about you,” one of them said. “We did not mention your names.

Their tones made me sigh in disgust. Childish.

“Axel, I am not sure what is happening here. They look frightened for some reason,” I said, holding Axel’s arm and tugging on it so he could calm down.

Slowly, Axel relaxed. “I am not sure I know them,” he said while giving them a glare that was cold enough to freeze hell over. “We should go and have our lunch.”

The treatment in the dining hall was even worse. Though the rest of the Alpha and Luna heirs tried not to make it obvious, it was still clear that they were avoiding us.

It was not like I was planning to make any new friends here-Moonflame was enough for me–but I wondered what exactly had happened to make them stay away from us.

It was later during the day that I found my answer.

As I was browsing one of the stores to get some of the food Axel and I would use on our date, I ran into some of the Luna heirs who were casually shopping.

I listened to them bicker amongst themselves for a few minutes, not giving it away that I could hear what they

were saying.

I was more concerned about the fact that they thought they needed a whole discussion on who should approach

me first.

Eventually, they decided amongst themselves and one of them led the group towards me. She stretched her hand out for a handshake.

“Hello, you’re Chloe, right? I am the future Luna of Silverrun, Luna Lillian,” she introduced herself with pride.

Silverrun was a pack further south from Everdeen. They were a strong pack with good enough trade but nowhere on Everdeen’s level.

For instance, the Silverrun pack could never dream of hosting the Alpha Ball in their wildest dreams but Everdeen hosted it once or twice every decade or so.

For her to come to me and firstly call me by my name and then, introduce herself with her title was blatant disrespect.

I turned away from her and continued my shopping. “It seems manners are not a thing in Silverrun. I could have sworn you had a royal etiquette teacher or two in your lineage.”

Lillian froze beside me, replaying my words in her head. I got what I wanted and started to walk to the next aisle.

I had not gotten Axel a gift in a while. Perhaps I could actually use my money this time around to buy him something.

As I moved to browse the ties section, I heard my name behind me. “Luna Chloe.”

I turned around. It had been one of the other girls with Lillian that spoke. She was more soft-spoken with her

manners intact.
