Chapter 144
Chloe’s POV
Axel was waiting for me in front of the guest house when I returned from the store.
The moment he sighted me, he rushed over, turning me left and right, checking my body. “Are you alright? I heard there was a fight at the store. Do you need me to kill someone?”
“If I told you yes, would you?” I said, meaning to tease him. When his expression did not change, my smile dropped. “You would not actually hurt someone because I said so.”
“Chloe, I am serious.” He stepped closer. “Someone saw the princess go into the store. Did you meet her?”
Remembering the look on the princess’ face as I said my bit and left, I winced slightly.
Rather than killing someone, he might need to protect me instead. As I was walking away, the princess looked like she was being forced to swallow a can of worms.
Hopefully, she took my words a little too close to heart and did not think about retaliating. I was not even sure if I had immunity as the King’s daughter, much less, Axel and the rest of Everdeen.
Axel, the ever perceptive one, noticed my expression and his eyes widened. “Seriously. You pissed her off? Chloe, what were you thinking?”
“I know. I know. I’m sorry. I saw the way she was looking at me and I just…I lost it, okay?”
My hands dragged over my face and I groaned, now thinking in retrospect of the consequences of disrespecting a member of the royal family.
“How about this?” Axel said. “We do not know for a fact that anything is going to happen. We should just put this behind us and make sure we do not cross paths with any members of the royal-”
“Not so fast,” a very familiar voice said behind me.
I jumped and glued to Axel’s side in an instant, eyes narrowing at Liam who was casually striding towards us with his hands in his pockets, no doubt aware of what had just transpired with his sister.
Or more accurately, sisters.
“Chloe, you are a very difficult woman to find,” Liam said and tried to yank me away from Axel.
Axel stepped between us, shielding me with his body.
Liam paused, his hand hovering in mid air. His lips stretched in a tight smile that did not reach his eyes.
The two men looked ready to kill each other.
“In case you thought I needed your permission to speak to my sister, I do not,” Liam said. “Move.”
Despite being faced with the prince and his obviously superior aura, Axel did not budge an inch. “Chloe has been rattled by all of you. One after the other in the past day. I would rather her get a breather.”
Liam seemed to hate even more that Axel was responding on my behalf. “Since when did you become her mouthpiece?”
“Can the two of you stop fighting over me like I am not standing right here?” I cut in, wearing an irritated frown.

I moved in front of Axel before he could stop me, holding onto his hand to reassure myself more than him. “Your Highness, did I do something wrong?”
Liam threw his head back and let out a deep groan. “This was why I did not want you to know that I was the prince. You were going to be like the rest of them, going on and on with the ‘Your Highness’ crap-”
“Perhaps I should go with your Royal Highness since you are the crown prince,” I replied, completely ignoring what he had just said. “It is more suited for your more regal position.”
Liam stepped forward and held my free hand. “Chloe. I am sorry. I really am.”
His words sounded so sincere but I knew better than to treat Liam like he was my friend.
He was the crown prince. His mother hated me. Once the ministers found out that there was another illegitimate child, they would hate me too.
There was no need to remain around him and cause problems for the both of us.
“Your Royal Highness, you have nothing to be sorry about,” I said, pulling my hand away from his. “This commoner is willing to accept all grievances if it will make the crown prince feel better.”
“It does not make me feel better. Chloe, come on.” He was starting to sound desperate. “I had a whole itinerary of things I wanted us to do together once you came. We can go-”
“I am sure you have an intended,” I said.
Liam paused, his words dropping from his lips. He looked away, his entire body radiating discomfort. “Can we not talk about that right now?”
He really must not like the girl they had chosen for him to marry.
