Chapter 16
Chloe’s POV
Was he being serious?
Why did I not tell him?
I was still unsure if he could tolerate my presence and he thought that I should have met him to tell him that I had a debt. Even more, I could no longer afford a new dress.
Axel sighed like he could read all of my thoughts on my face before he lowered his voice so only the two of us could hear.
“Regardless of what you think of me, the fact remains that you are my Luna. Money is not your problem.”
My mouth opened and then closed in a frown. I thought about his words.
Why did I care if he started to find me overbearing? It was not like I cared for his opinion about me. In less than a year, I would be gone.
Yet, I still could not find it in me to open my mouth to ask for money from him.
Axel brought out his wallet from his pocket and took out a black card, identical to the one Jax had. “This is yours. You can keep it,” he said.
I glared down at the card like it was poison.
Axel did not look bothered. He simply set it down on the bed and straightened. “If you happen to max out the card and need more money, just come to me. I have more money than I know what to do with.”
An idea flashed in my mind. If I used his card to buy jewelry or gold, I would have funds to sustain myself when it was time to leave.
I could move to another state and settle down in one of the human towns/
“As for you…” he said, turning to David and Hannah. “You ripped my Luna’s dress and you did not pay for it at the store.”
Hannah’s words were caught in her throat. Jax moved her behind him but he did not say a word in her defense.
Axel’s jaw clenched. There was only so much he could do to Hannah, especially when she was his brother’s mate, also a member of the Alpha family.
“You will reimburse the store in full,” he said to Hannah. “If I hear that anyone helped you finish the payment…” His eyes slid over to Jax and Axel left it at that, pushing past my family as he walked down the stairs.
When we could not longer hear his footsteps, David huffed and walked down the stairs as well. Mum sent me a sympathetic glance before hurrying after her husband.
As much as she loved me, I could never come before her bid to calm her husband down.
Finally, it was Jax, Hannah and I that were left.
Jax got to his feet, looking at me like I was human scum. “All this for a dress.”
My anger returned with full wave. How dare he try to come and make me look like the petty one?

Where was he when his mate was throwing a tantrum in the store that it was not her who was holding the dress when the store attendant found it torn?
Who would the store be more likely to believe? The girl who was going to spend two hundred dollars on them or the one waving a black card?
“Since it is so cheap, I guess it would not be that hard for my sister to pay for it alone, right?” I retorted.
“You little…” Jax hissed, his fists tight. He turned around and held Hannah, helping her down the stairs.
I laid back on my bed, relishing the silence. Axel’s face flashed in my mind.
The expression on it was not concern. Not really. It was mostly blank, like the face someone had as they carried out responsibility.
