Chapter 153
Axel’s POV
The battle was horribly skewed from the get-go.
Sure, we had an advantage in numbers and the fact that we were all of Alpha blood but there was something in the fog that was messing with our consciousness.
I was surviving simply on sheer willpower, black dots appearing in the corners of my eyes.
Some of the Alphas were worse off, struggling to stay on their feet but no one had fainted. Not yet.
“I thought you said these animals were weak,” one of our attackers said. He stood in front of us as a human, completely unbothered by the wolves growling at him.
Their leader replied. “I said they were weaker than their fathers, not that they were weak. They are the future Alphas of their packs, you know.”
They started bickering right in front of us. They clearly did not take us seriously.
That meant they were very confident in whatever it was that they put in the fog.
“We do not need this anymore. The antidote is starting to fail for our own rogues,” their leader said again and suddenly, the fog started to clear.
That was when I truly got a read of the number of people we were facing. Dozens of them, all with silver weapons that had a shiny coating on them.
Poison probably. They were trying to kill us all.
Darius limped over to my side, clearly still hurting from his recent battle. I helped him stay up, not wanting either of us to look weak in front of the other Alphas who were looking up to us at that moment.
“I heard Moonflame’s young Alpha is here,” one of them said. “His sister was the one that got away, right?”
Their leader scoffed. “Not for long. The rogues should be tracking them now.”
He turned to us, his eyes shining with malice through his goggles. “I heard wolves do not let their Lunas train and have them rely on their Alphas for protection. I would like to see how they fare.”
His lips curled up in a cruel smirk. “Those rogues have been starving for days, I doubt there will even be a body to bury.”
The hunters snickered amongst themselves.
Though a few of us recognized that they were taunting, a majority of us did not. Growls and low whines started to rise from our ranks.
I raised my voice and growled at the Alpha heirs, telling them to shut up. It took a few seconds but a hush settled over our side of the battlefield.
Their leader turned to me. “Are you the Alpha heir of Moonflame?”
I continued to glare at him without a verbal response. He did not deserve my answers.

His eyes slightly narrowed. “…no. I know that stubborn look in your eyes. Your father is that bastard, Paul Everdeen.”
As my father’s name was said, the hunters seemed to grow angrier. I stared at all of them, wondering what exactly my father did to make them so upset but then again, that was not important right now.
With the way things were going, the best we could do was stall for time, until we got reinforcements from somewhere. I did not believe that there was not someone around who could help.
Their leader took a step forward. “You must be waiting for reinforcements, aren’t you?” he mocked. “No one is coming.”
His head tilted. “I heard you took a mate recently. Pretty thing. Able to curry favor with royalty. I told the rogues not to kill her. She would be useful as a tool for my plans.”
The anger was already building up in my chest until I remembered who he was talking about.
Chloe. My Chloe.
He wanted to capture her and use her?
Ridiculous.
She would rather bite her tongue and die than be anyone’s slave.
That is, if they were able to capture her.
The leader caught my reaction and it made him even angrier. “Kill them.”
The two sides leaped forward at once, the Alphas thrashing with all their might but it was useless.
Soon enough, we were subdued, every single one of us bleeding from different places on our bodies, the poison fighting against our natural healing process.
However, we had significantly injured the other side as well, even at the cost of our lives.
“You little bastards!” the leader snarled and we growled back, both sides heaving.
My vision tilted but I managed to stay upright. I had to finish this. I had to…
My legs gave way beneath me and I fell to the ground with a thud.
That was not just poison. Wolfsbane. Where on Earth did they get wolfsbane from?
“Took it long enough to kick in,” someone spat.
I was the one here with the most wounds so it was affecting me the most. Every second, I felt my strength draining.
That was when I heard a growl from deeper into the forest.
It was not a regular growl from any wolf. It sounded like it came from the depths of the forest itself.
Royalty.
