Chapter 159
Chloe’s POV
I crossed my arms over my chest as I turned to him.
Before I could say anything, he pressed a finger against my lips. “I am going to pretend I did not see anything and do not know that you are going to throw your dearest sister to the wolves.”
After he said that, he threw an arm around my shoulder, steering me towards the palace.
At the gates, the guards did not stop us, even bowing as we passed by.
“You said you wanted to ask Liam for a favor?” he asked, looking down at me. “Is it different from the one you wanted to ask me?”
I gnawed on my lower lip. How did he know I wanted to ask him for a favor?
He just had that much experience dealing with people sucking up to him.
Now, I felt scummy for using the same tactic to get what I want. “I can just ask Liam. I will look for a way to negotiate with him.”
Nicola stopped walking and turned to face me. His brows looked drawn tight with irritation.
“You really are very annoying,” Nicola muttered. “Do you think Liam cares about your money? Or whatever you want to offer him really. That man is in love with you.
My mouth opened and then closed. I broke our eye contact. “He is my half brother.”
“I never thought the day would come when I would hear you admit that with your own mouth.”
My breath caught in my throat as Liam walked closer, wearing a tired smile, his glasses perched low on his face. He handed the papers in his hands to the man beside him and took off his glasses.
For a moment, I thought he was going to toss the glasses to the ground but he simply pinched the bridge of
his nose.
Suddenly, he paused and then, his gaze met mine. Before he could say anything, I knew it was nothing good.
“Hey, you are a college graduate, right?” he asked. “Much better than I am. Good, you even studied biology.”
He grabbed my shoulders and steered me towards a large set of double doors.
“I just know those old fogies are trying to run circles around me but I cannot prove it,” he spat, suddenly angry. “Just help me put them in their place. Whatever you want, I will give it to you afterwards.”
“You have not even heard the request-”
“You will not come to me if it was not something sensible,” Liam cut in immediately. “I trust you.”
My lips parted in more surprise than anything. I stopped struggling and walked alongside him into the conference room.

The scene I saw was the last thing I expected.

My own pill being dissected by respected academics in the field of wolf biology that I looked up to my whole childhood.
Before long, I truly understood the meaning of the phrase, ‘Never meet your heroes.’
I sat at the head of the table beside Liam, listening to them as they spewed more nonsense with each
sentence.
Some of them, unable to understand the chemical composition, were firmly insisting that the test subjects for the pill were highly selected and must have already been experiencing a breakthrough from their prior treatment.
The others who believed that the pill actually worked completely misinterpreted the formation and operation within the wolf’s biological system.
One of them was even bold enough to suggest that it could be mass produced and given to humans.
As though the fact that the pill was created with the average wolf’s aggressive regeneration in mind had completely gone over their heads. A pill that strong on a human would rip them apart from the inside out.
Liam kept glancing at me, studying the blank expression on my face.
I remained quiet, waiting for someone to stand up and redeem the bunch of idiots in front of me but time passed and no one did.
“Well, this is very disappointing,” I finally said, leaning back in my chair. “I actually used to have some of your books kept as my prized possessions.”
They all quieted, turning to me.
Doctor Silvereen, the director of the werewolf biology institute, stepped forward.
“Miss Waterson, I admit you are talented to some degree,” he said, leaning forward on the table. “But this pill is nothing more than a vitamin at best. The miracle cure that you have claimed it to be could not be created by someone who has as little experience as you do.”
It was funny that this was the way I got to meet him. I had dreamed one day of being his mentee, sitting under his tutelage but it seemed his pride was bigger than his ability to admit the truth.
I leaned forward on the desk, wearing an expression designed to infuriate him.
“And tell me, how many of your vitamins have brought multiple people out of comas, Doctor?”
