My Stepsister Returned To Rewrite Fate But I Became Luna (Chloe) novel Chapter 175

Chapter 175

Chloe’s POV

“You two sure look carefree,” Tony said beside us as the next pair of guests finished their greetings and returned to their tables.

Axel turned to his Beta with a raised brow. “Is there any reason we should not be?” he asked.

Tony looked down the table to where Jax and Hannah sat at the end, silent and clearly uncomfortable.

Hannah was dressed in a beautiful emerald dress and Jax had matched her with an emerald colored tie.

I was not so naive to not realize that it was intentional. Anyone who had been around me long enough knew my preference for green outfits.

It would not take Hannah too much to find out the color of the dress I had been planning to wear tonight.

If I had actually worn the green dress that Riven bought me, a chunk of the conversations between the guests would have been comparing Hannah and me.

Even at my mating ceremony, she was still trying to look for a way to steal the show.

“Some people are just so starved for attention,” I said loudly enough that Jax and Hannah could hear me.

Her cheeks went beet red and she turned to me, her mouth opening but Jax grabbed her arm, forcing her to remain seated.

The two of them had a hushed but heated conversation before Jax stood from the table and stomped away.

“Bastard.”

All of us turned to Amira when she said that and she flinched. “W-What is it?” Her hand lifted and covered her mouth. “Did I say that out loud?”

Amira and I had not spent so much time together from my past life until now. However, now that Tony was bringing her around a lot more often, I was getting to know more of her personality.

Though she was frightfully quiet and shy, she was also decisive and loyal.

“We should go get coffee soon,” I said. She blinked once, twice and then smiled, nodding.

My heart melted when I saw her smile. She was so beautiful.

Axel yanked me back by the collar of my dress. “You will not be giving another person heart eyes, not on my watch.”

Before we started bickering, someone came up to the table and cleared their throat. Axel and I turned in unison, matching expressions of irritation appearing on our faces.

David was looking down at the two of us with his face blank. However, when neither of us acknowledged him, his fingers tightened around his wine glass.

“Chloe, I have not seen you since you returned,” he said casually. “You should have come home for a meal before the ceremony today.”

His audacity to act like we were on talking terms.

“Well, David,” I replied in his same casual tone. “It is a pity that I was swamped with spending time with my mate and god-family. Perhaps you can book an appointment for later. I will find a way to fit…a meal into my schedule.”

His jaw clenched. “Surely you must be joking? You cannot erase blood ties with a few sentences.”

“I would have thought so but unfortunately, I have come to know better.”

It was not difficult to find my mother’s eyes in the crowd. She had been staring at me since the start of the ceremony. It was still difficult to tell what exactly she was thinking about.

David lowered his voice so only he and us could hear what he was saying. “What you did today was disrespectful to your mother-”

I scoffed. “Do not act like you actually give a damn about my mother. You’re just upset that I made you lose face in front of everyone by refusing to acknowledge you.”

I got to my feet, looking him straight in the eyes as best as I could.

“I am sure your darling daughter has told you all that happened at the Alpha meet. All of it. That is why you are here.”

I let my wolf rise to the surface. She was already snapping inside of me at David’s disrespect.

“After all, you gave me a roof over my head and scraps from your table to keep me alive all this while. That is the only reason I have not killed you myself. I am not ungrateful.”

My eyes sharpened. “Do not test me, David. I have ways of making you wish you were dead.”

The words slipping out of my lips so easily alarmed even me because I meant every single word of it.

I had been very cautious over the past few months because I was trying to leave with a clean slate.

Now that things had come to this, I was prepared to take the bull by the horns and match all of their attacks with worse retaliation.

I sure had the resources and the connections to do them.

My hand reached for the glass of wine on the table and I clinked it against David’s glass.

“You must be very proud to have your two daughters come from nothing and then marry into an Alpha family,” I said louder, taking a sip of the wine. “Congratulations.”

Now that people were staring at us, David could do nothing but smile and drink.

He nodded once before walking away from the table and disappearing into a side room. I looked at my mother with a raised brow.

As expected, she stood from her chair and followed after him.

Axel and I returned to greeting the guests until it was much late in the night.
