Chloe’s POV

The atmosphere was so taut that it should have been difficult to breathe.

I sat at a round table with the two men upset at each other and absolutely furious with me. Hannah had just destroyed whatever trust they had in the Alpha family.

Then, she had the audacity to call Jax to take her away. Just thinking about it made me want to punch a hole through a wall.

“Huh, I see. They dumped the unimportant daughter on us?” Jared drawled, glaring at me. “What? The Alpha family does not deem us important to send someone who is not a child?”

The jab stung but I had to endure it.

“She is still a member of the Alpha family. You do not speak to her in that manner-”

“Don’t you dare preach at me just because she is on your fucking side,” Jared interrupted Leonard. Suddenly, he scoffed. “You must be so glad to have the sensible one on your side-”

“I am not on anyone’s side,” I said and was instantly pinned to my seat with sharp glares from both parties.

My fingers wrung together. It took another three hours just to get them to the table for a discussion. The guests should have started arriving already.

“Can I speak?” I asked them, expecting the biting remark before it came.

“It is not like we can tell the Alpha’s daughter-in-law to shut up,” Leonard replied, his tone lazy but that gaze…

“My sister has caused quite a bit of offense,” I started, thinking it was not wise to gloss it over. “I apologize on her behalf.”

“Your sister?” Leonard asked with a raised eyebrow.

“Yes, my sister,” I repeated, emphasizing my meaning.

Hannah did not represent the will of the Alpha’s family. She was just being an entitled brat.

I turned to Jared. He clicked his tongue, turning his head away from me.

Perhaps Leonard would be easier to get to…right?

“I figured that there is some bad blood between you two.” As the two of them were about to give their input, I quickly added. “Ahead of this battle. This seems like a small matter to have escalated to such a level for such warrior families.”

Their reaction this time was more pointed. Discomfort. A little more irritation than anger.

“I do think this is a matter that should be sorted before we move to the one at hand-”

“I will not be negotiating with a thief,” Jared spat, not looking at anyone in particular.

Leonard was more direct, snarling at Jared. “What the hell can I do about the mate bond? And keep in mind, your daughter threw herself at my son!”

Jared slapped his hands down at the table. “So you are calling my little girl a whore?!”

“You called her that.” Leonard crossed his hands, leaning back in his chair. “Do not speak like your estate would have been accessible if your daughter did not let him in.”

I looked between the two men piecing the story together from their back and forth.

“Ah…I see,” I muttered under my breath but they heard me.

Before they could rip into me, I stood, raising both hands in front of them. “Leonard, did your son take permission from Jared before taking his daughter away?”

“No!” Jared snarled. “You stole my only child and you have refused to release her back to me-”
