Chapter 19
Chloe’s POV
I opened the door of my bedroom and looked outside. A maid was passing by at the time so I beckoned to her.
She set down her cleaning supplies and followed me into my bedroom. I pointed at the white box on the bed.
“Do you know where that came from?”
As much as I would love to believe that Axel grew a heart and decided to send me a dress, I did not believe that mattered to him that much.
“It was me,” Mum said as she entered the room. She smiled at the maid, waving her away.
I stared at Mum as she walked to the box and opened the dress, revealing a beautiful green gown.
“I found a way to speak to Axel’s stylists,” she said, bringing out the outfit from the box. “He is going to wear a green tie as well so that you two would match-”
“What are you doing?” I blurted.
There was a green dress in my wardrobe, a copy of the one Hannah had torn. Why did she get me another one?
Mum’s hands froze, her eyes watering. She let the dress fall to the bed as she grabbed my hands. “What mum would not want her daughter to look wonderful on her first social event?”
I stared at Mum for long enough that she started to squirm.
The banquet was ongoing. If she cared for my dressing, she could have come earlier to find me when I was being yelled at.
Before I could press, she blurted out her ‘sin.’ “I am so sorry. I had to make rounds with David to show our support for Hannah. I know. You are my daughter. I would never…you just…you know how to handle yourself better…”
My hands dropped from hers. Mum’s face shattered and she tried to reach for me again. “Chloe, wait. Let me explain. David is the Beta. There is an image we need to maintain-”
“I am not questioning what you need to do with your husband,” I interrupted, finding that I was not even upset about the matter.
I knew from the beginning that more than fleeting romance, the primary reason that Mum had married David was because of his status and financial stability.
After the life of takeout and a cardboard box-sized apartment, she saw a way out and she took it for us both.
Lifting the dress from the bed, I placed it against my body and faced the mirror. It was gorgeous, way better than what I initially planned to wear.
“Thank you,” I said as I slipped on the dress.
She rushed forward to help me put it on. “No, it is my duty,” she replied, her smile shaky as she tried to maintain it on her face.
When we finished with the dress, she volunteered to help with my jewelry and makeup. When she picked up the perfume, I had to chase her out of my bedroom.

With the room finally empty, I was finally able to let out the sigh I had been holding.
I stood in front of the mirror, leaning forward to look at my face. It was evidently young, far younger than I remembered but with the makeup and dress, it was like I was twenty-seven again.
“Focus, Chloe,” I muttered. Today was about winning Luna Silvia’s support.
Everything else came secondary.
When I touched up my makeup and stepped out of my bedroom, my mother was nowhere to be found.
“David called for her,” Tony said, kicking off the wall. “Axe told me to pick you up.”
Sent? On the Alpha banquet?
As the Alpha of a pack, you would think that he would understand responsibility.
“Where is he?” I asked, already heading down the stairs to meet Axel. Then Tony’s next words made me pause.
“Ah…he has already gone into the banquet hall,” Tony explained, shifting from foot to foot in discomfort. “He told me to bring you to him.”
I snorted in disbelief. Suddenly, I was cargo to him.
He goes through the effort of our whole arrangement and suddenly, waiting an hour for me to get dressed is asking too much.
