Chloe’s POV

If the hall could grow any quieter, it did.

All eyes were on mè, assessing, picking apart the girl who Axel Everdeen had deemed worthy to stand beside him.

Axel steered me straight forward, until we got to the table that his family sat at.

“Father. Mother. Chloe is here,” he said, presenting me like I was some gift.

Before I could greet, Alpha Paul spoke. “It is seven pm. This started four hours ago. Where have you been?”

The rebuke was sharp and biting, definitely not the kind of first impression I wanted to have on Alpha Paul at first meeting.

He must have seen me with Luna Diane go into the house around four pm. Three hours was too long to dress especially when you were late.

Except that I did not spend the whole time dressing up.”

I straightened my back but kept my gaze respectful enough to tell him that I was subordinate to him but I would not back down.

“Half of the snacks in the kitchen were made wrong because Hannah had delivered the wrong instructions and left halfway through the meal prep to have an impromptu hangout with her friends. I had to stay in the kitchen to make sure they were redone properly.”

Axel stiffened beside me, his parents and Jax looking at me with varying degrees of surprise.

Wow. Had anyone even cared to find out where I was?

All it would have taken was a quick ask through the pack house to find out where I was.

Slowly, Alpha Paul turned to Luna Diane and in turn, she turned to Hannah. Under the scrutiny of the Alpha and Luna, Hannah could not bring herself to utter a word, only able to clench her hand around Jax’s.

Jax looked like he had his head in the clouds, pointedly trying to avoid being a part of the conversation.

Seeing Hannah silent after what happened with the sub-clans eased a bit of the tension off my shoulders. I smiled and dropped into a perfect curtsey.

“But, I apologize, Alpha. My lateness has embarrassed you. It will never happen again.”

Alpha Paul’s eyes narrowed but he nodded once waved Axel and I to sit and eat.

The moment that the attention was off her, Hannah darted away from the table like fire was licking her heels.

The whole time she kept darting around the room, her eyes kept darting towards the door antsy. Looking out for

Luna Silvia.

I was probably contributing to her anxiety because I was eating the pastries spread on the table calmly. Axel was being attentive for once, replacing the pastries in my plate as they finished.

He remained absorbed in conversation with his father though.

After thirty minutes that probably felt like three hours to Hannah, Luna Silvia walked in with her mate, Alpha
