Chapter 22
Chloe’s POV
Luna Silvia moved around the hall with me silently on her arm, watching, listening intently to how she spoke to people.
My mind ran, comparing the information I was being exchanged in front of me with what I learned in my past life. It was a lot richer than I expected.
After some time, Luna Diane came herself to greet Luna Silvia.
“Diane!” Luna Silvia said, going in for a hug.
Luna Diane hugged her back as they exchanged pleasantries. I stood to the side but Luna Silvia pulled me back into the conversation.
“Might I say you have a lovely daughter-in-law,” Luna Silvia said.
“If I did not know better, I would think she was your daughter-in-law.”
I took an involuntary step back. Had I accidentally stepped onto a battlefield and not realized it?
“Surely you must be joking.” Luna Silvia’s laughter turned smug. “Then again, she and Axel have not been officially wed, have they? Anything can happen before then.”
“I hope by anything, you mean finding your son a mate. How old is he? Twenty-four? Three whole years older than my Axel.”
Luna Silvia’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Chloe is not so petty to care about trivial matters like age.”
Wait a minute.
I replayed their conversation in my head. Luna Silvia wanted me to marry her son?
Why would I leave Everdeen to run to a pack as famed as MoonFlame for their ruthlessness? One mistake and I was more likely to die there.
“Luna, I have some last minute arrangements to check in with the kitchen,” I said, backing away.
Retreat to advance. That was the wisest thing to do at the moment.
“Stay,” Luna Silvia said, pulling me to her side. “I am your chaperone for the evening.”
Why not shout it off the rooftops that she was trying to be my mother?
“Chloe has a mother,” Luna Diane retorted.
“A mother that I do not see anywhere,” Luna Silvia said, looking around the hall to make her point. “Perhaps she is occupied in some backroom with her husband while her daughter navigates her first social event underage and alone.”
It took effort to not let my emotions slip onto my face. I did not need my mother’s help right now so why did Luna Silvia’s words hurt so much?
I shook my head, smiling. “It is quite alright, Luna. My mother is a Beta female as well so she has secondary obligations.”

“Secondary,” Luna Silvia repeated in a harsh tone, scolding me.
The silent message was clear: Do not dare repeat that in my presence again.
“Yes, Luna,” I said, my voice somber.
“Let the child defend her mother,” Luna Diane said and suddenly, the two women were back to being friends.
I was not sure of their history but watching them interact made it obvious that they had some. My heart started to long for something it always did in my past life.
Company. Company from someone my age with similar struggles as I was going through.
But I supposed that I would be hard pressed to find a former rogue whose mother married into a Beta family and was mated to an Alpha’s son while underage.
“Your son is glaring at me,” Luna Silvia said without turning to look at the table.
