Chapter 24
Axel’s POV

Conrad’s question caused a wave of irritation to rise up inside me. Involuntarily, I pulled Chloe closer to my side. A scathing remark was on the tip of my tongue when a low chuckle came from beside me.
All eyes turned to Chloe to see her lift a gloved hand to her mouth as she tried to ‘disguise’ her giggle. I knew enough about Chloe to know that she would not let laughter slip out by mistake in a setting like this.
Conrad did not find a girl half his age laughing at him funny so he turned a harsh glare on Chloe. “Excuse me?”
“Oh, don’t mind me. I was just unaware of the right of an outsider to involve himself in the affairs of the Alpha family of Everdeen.”
If it was possible for the circle to get quieter, it did.
Conrad only grew angrier, his wolf rising to the surface slowly. Chloe stared him down like she had a decade of experience, dealing with bullshit like that.
Times like this made me wonder if Chloe was actually older than she said she was. After all, she had shifted and was very in tune with her wolf as I could see from the time we fought together.
“Are you speaking to me, little girl?” he spat.
The way he addressed her grated on my nerves. Before I could speak, Chloe’s hand flattened on my chest, stopping
“Alpha Conrad Greyson,” she said slowly, an assured smile on her face. “I get the feeling that you are upset for some reason. May you enlighten me? I would love to learn from my elders.”
There was nothing wrong in what she said.
Her tone however…
It was as though she was disciplining an unruly child. In a circle of Alphas who have been navigating social spaces for years, that much was obvious.
Yet she managed to do it without drawing much attention to herself and the conversation.
I knew I had made the right choice with her. How had she hidden her talents in plain sight in the pack for so long?
Whatever Conrad was about to say was interrupted by my glare. His jaw clenched as he backed down.
“I have intruded on the matters of the Everdeen pack,” he whispered through gritted teeth. “For that, I apologize.”
Chloe feigned confusion. “Oh no. It is not a matter of an apology. I know you only speak out of concern for my mate. If anything, I am glad to have people like you looking out for him.”
The other Alphas started giving each other knowing glances and then, they turned their interest on Chloe.
Alarm bells started going off in my head. Next thing and they might start trying to poach my Luna away.
“Chloe, your feet must hurt in those heels for so long,” I said, steering her away.
She did not resist. “Thank you, Axel. All of a sudden, I might be craving some orange juice.”

Instantly, three of the Alpha heirs near us turned towards the table with the juice. I was not sure if she knew what she was doing but I refused to let another man take her away so easily.
I gave the servers signals. They were trained well enough to understand what I was saying and intercept the Alpha heirs before they arrived at the table.
Imagine the scandal it would be if people saw men tripping over themselves to get drinks for my Luna.
Hannah already had a bit of a promiscuous reputation that Father and I were fighting to keep under wraps within the pack. The same thing could not happen with Chloe.
Speaking of Father…
