Chapter 28
Chloe’s POV
“I told you I will see you again, Chloe,” the ginger from earlier greeted me as I entered the dining room.
She was seated directly opposite Alpha Paul at the other end of the Alpha table. My gaze moved to Axel
He was already looking at me, pointedly informing me to return her greeting.
“Miss Crane. I did not expect our second meeting to be so soon,” I replied as I walked to the seat beside Axel. “Forgive me for not recognizing you earlier.”
“Why are you late this time, Chloe?” Alpha Paul asked, his gaze piercing. “Did something go wrong in the kitchen this time?”
“No, Alpha. I was not aware that my presence would be wanted at dinner…forgive me, Alpha.”
The people who were currently at the table were him, his wife and Axel. Jax and Hannah were missing and I was ninety percent certain that they would not receive the scolding that I did.
I had to come to terms with the fact that after the stunt I pulled at Hannah’s birthday, Alpha Paul would
not like me.
“May I sit, Alpha?” I asked him, my hands resting at my sides.
He looked away from me like he could not be bothered to speak to me before waving his hand. I sat beside Axel, my lips pressed together, hands flat on my thighs as we waited for the other Alpha couple.
Celestia started to fill the time with small talk. She turned to me with a dazzling smile. “So, Chloe, how did you know Axel was the one? Matings are a big deal for us women, you know?”
What sort of a question was that? And why would she ask it in front of Axel’s parents? Was she trying to get me to say the wrong thing?
I glanced at Axel from the corner of my eyes. The unhelpful block of stone sat straight, his face blank.
At least, give me a clue on what to say.
“Axel is every woman’s dream. It would be foolish of me to let go of such a good thing,” I said, already knowing the follow-up question.
Celestia frowned slightly. “But it is common knowledge that you turned Axel down at your sister’s birthday, even after Hannah said that you were completely smitten with him?”
Firstly, that was not what Hannah said. Secondly, it had dawned on me what Celestia was trying to do.
She was trying to paint me as fickle in the presence of the Alpha and Luna. Axel and I were not yet married. I could still be replaced by someone more capable.
Someone with background, looks and mannerisms to match a true Luna.

Someone like her.

“My infatuation did not automatically mean that I was ready for the responsibility of being a Luna. My sister had her entire life to accept the reality. All I had asked for was a few nights to think about it and Alpha Paul was very gracious to grant me that.”
Celestia’s smile froze on her face as her eyes shifted to Alpha Paul. He was staring, no, glaring at me like I had dragged his name through the mud.
However, because of my phrasing, he could not directly point out what it was that I did.
