My Stepsister Returned To Rewrite Fate But I Became Luna (Chloe) novel Chapter 29

Chapter 29

Chloe’s POV

The dining table was completely silent, save for the clink of cutlery against the plate.

I forced the food down my throat, knowing that there was no way that the juicy meat tasted like the bland paper in my mouth but tasting it anyway.

All I wanted to do was run away from the table, lock myself in my bedroom and not come out for the next

week.

But if not for the fact that etiquette demanded that Alpha Paul be the first to get up, I did not want Celestia to have this round.

Her insinuation had been utterly ridiculous, especially when you considered the fact that Axel proposed by himself, came himself to deliver me a mating gift and brought me to the pack house.

The so-called legitimate daughter-in-law, Hannah, was still not allowed to live in the pack house.

Yet, Celestia’s words were enough to paint my motives for marrying Axel as childish, potentially dangerous for the pack. Even if Alpha Paul was not asking questions before, which I knew that he was, he would be asking them now.

Halfway through the meal, I could no longer force the food down my throat. I set down my cutlery and waited silently for Alpha Paul to finish.

Seeing her chance, Celestia turned to me and held my hand. She wore a warm smile that might have won me over if I did not see that triumphant look in her eyes.

“Chloe, you must be upset at what I said. It’s just that a crazy thought crossed my head. I must read too many stories-”

“It really was a crazy thought.” I placed my hand over hers, squeezing as tightly as she was. Her smile cracked as her jaw tightened in pain.

“You yourself said mating was very important for women. Why would I throw my life away on something as silly as payback? It is not my fault that Jax and Hannah found themselves better suited for each other.”

Unable to admit defeat, Celestia pressed tighter, leaning closer.

“Oh, you do not feel resentment towards your sister? At all? There is news of your bad blood floating through the pack-”

Hannah saw her chance to hop in. She sighed dramatically. “I mean, I did not want to speak bad about my sister-”

“Then, don’t,” I said to her before returning to Celestia. “Hannah and I have differences in our value systems but we are sisters. How deep can our beef go?”

I let go of Celestia’s hands and returned to waiting. Hannah was still utterly dumbfounded at my outrightly, telling her to shut up.

Jax was about to speak when Axel’s fork slammed down on his plate a bit forcefully. The younger son ducked his head and focused on chewing his food.

“Is the food not to your taste, Chloe?” Luna Diane asked, finally speaking.

She had been watching the entire interaction in silence. More than anyone, I wanted to know what was going through her head.

“The meal is lovely, Luna. I just never have dinner this early so I am not very hungry.”

That was not the reason I could not eat more but it was true that I never had dinner at seven. My dinners were usually around two or three hours from now before I slept around midnight.

“Perhaps I will have a late night snack sent up to your room.”
