Chapter 36
Axel’s POV
My hand hovered over the door knob, listening for any sound of page flipping or breathing inside the library.
The walls were thin enough so it was surprising that I did not hear anything from inside after Viktor
confirmed that Chloe was in here.
Cracking open the door as silently as possible, I slithered into the room, scanning the shelves. The moment I heard a sound, my back pressed against one of the shelves and I held my breath.
Why the hell was I so jumpy? I mean, I did come here to check on her but actually seeing her was not a part of my plans.
All day, she had been hovering my mind, particularly the look on her face when I told her that I wanted to help her. I had found a way to convince myself that I was in the wrong and came to make things right yet
I was met with disgust.
That should have been my cue to move on and find something more productive to focus on but it just kept nagging me in the back of my mind.
I could not sleep properly, snapping awake the moment Celestia knocked on her door. Chloe had immediately followed her out so she had been awake for hours before that to read, like she said she
would.
How long did it take her to build that kind of discipline? And she was just seventeen.
“Never thought I would see the great Alpha heir like this-mmph.”
I pressed my hand against Tony’s mouth, muffling whatever nonsense that he was about to say.
That time, I heard a sound from further down the shelves, like the scrape of a chair. Tony and I went still for a whole minute.
Eventually, he was able to pry my hand off his mouth. “She cannot hear us from this distance,” he whispered. “She is still technically human, remember?”
“Like you know anything,” I muttered, moving slowly towards the shelf I heard the scrape for. Did she already know how to mask her presence with her wolf?
Tony grabbed my sleeve. “Hey, why are we hiding exactly? And from your mate, no less-”
My head snapped back. “We are not hiding.”
“Yes, we are.” Tony leaned closer. “You do not want her to see us. That is what? Hiding.”
He would not get it anyway so there was no point in explaining. After a bit more walking, I finally caught the hint of her scent.

There she was.

Chloe sat on the floor at the end of the shelves, hunched over as she read a book. Every few seconds, her head would fall back against the shelves and she would mutter to herself.
My eyes fixed on the dark circles around her eyes. Maybe my view was distorted but it even seemed like she had lost a little weight.
Suddenly, her body tilted forward and she collapsed on a chair. I moved instinctively, appearing by her
side in milliseconds.
“Is she breathing?” Tony muttered, his finger moving under her nostrils. “I cannot hear anything.”
Her heart pounding in her chest was the only sound I could hear as I picked her up running out of the pack house.
“Call the infirmary,” I said to Tony. “I want an exclusive suite ready by the time I arrive.”
When I arrived, the nurses were already waiting out front. They moved to take Chloe from my arms and I instinctively held her against my chest, snarling at them.
They all flinched away, baring their necks to me in submission.
“Alpha, we need to take her to check the problem,” the head nurse said.
