Chapter 39
Chloe’s POV
I glanced at Axel, wondering if this was some kind of trick question.
The safe thing would have been to go for a textbook response and say something about wanting to use this gift to be beneficial to the pack but Alpha Paul was not an idiot.
No matter how Axel tried to cover for me. It was evident that I had intended to hide this for as long as
possible.
did not shift on the full moons, go on runs or attempt to train. If I had not done that for two months, I
was not planning to start anytime soon.
“I do not know,” I said slowly, carefully, watching every reaction across his face and body. “I have not heard of something like this happening before so I just tried to stay as far as possible from the situation
“But you are comfortable enough using it when it benefits you?” he interrupted. “Like when your sister abandoned you at the border. That was how you came back unscathed.”
What did he want from me? To surrender myself to him?
I was not going to pledge myself to the pack, just to save my neck. I refused to be bound to another man, much less another Alpha, living my days to please him.
My hands scrunched underneath my blanket.
What do I do now? The last thing I wanted was to give Alpha Ryan a reason to think that my true commitment was not to the pack.
“Father, this is the exact reason she might have thought to hide it from you. Did you think about how she would have felt on that night, scared about what was happening to her?”
His voice was level but anyone who could hear would be able to tell that he was scolding Alpha Paul.
“What does it concern me about her fear-”
“It does not concern you but it concerns me. She is a seventeen year old whose wolf is erratic inside of her. The last thing she needs right now is you telling her what and what not to do with her life.”
Axel’s words settled with finality in the room. I held my breaths, waiting for Alpha Paul’s reaction.
After what felt like forever when it really was just two minutes, Alpha Paul stood up from his chair, heading towards the door.
“We will continue this conversation later,” he said and slammed the door behind him so hard that it rattled throughout the room.
Axel did not look fazed by his father’s anger, turning to me to tuck me back into the bed. “You need to

rest. That antidote must have been a bit strong. Your wolf might flare up in a bit-”
“You did not have to do that,” I said, stopping what he wanted to say in its tracks.
He looked up at my face. “Do what?”
“Speak to your father like that.” I brushed away his hand and pulled up the blanket to my chin myself. “He was making sense and you know it. Whatever we want to say does not change the fact that we hid such an important detail from him.”
“And he will just have to deal with that,” Axel said, leaning down to adjust the brightness of the lamp beside my bed.
Beneath his natural earthy scent, a hint of expensive cologne wafted into my nostrils. My gaze slid from his arms up to his Adam’s apple bobbing in his throat.
He did not look down but there was no way he did not notice me staring at him.
“Sleep. I will come back tomorrow to check on you,” he said before heading to the door.
I nodded, my eyes following him out of the room. The moment the door shut, I fell asleep and was pulled into a dream about something that happened in my past life.
