Chapter 45

Chloe’s POV
Darius reached to shake my hand and then frowned when I boldly returned his handshake. He stared at me, long enough for me to raise a brow and wonder if there was something on my face.
Then, his head snapped to his parents. “You said she was seventeen?”
My head tilted. What did my age have to do with this?
Luna Silvia threw her head back and laughed. “You noticed it too. This little girl does not give a damn
about our titles.”
I flinched. How could she say that in front of two Alphas? Was she trying to get me killed?
“Calm down,” Luna Silvia said, amusement playing in her eyes. “They are just noticing that you do not react to the fact that they are Alphas. At the ball, David thought Axel was suppressing the energy around
you-”
“I see now that that is not the case.” Alpha David shook my hand. “Your father is a Beta?”
“Step-father,” I corrected. “I do not know who my real father is. But my mother is of Gamma lineage.”
Alpha David sniffed the air around me and shook his head. “I have no idea what it is…why don’t we sit
and eat?”
“For them…” I trailed off, pointing behind me to Mara and Viktor.
Luna Silvia waved them to the table, telling the staff of her home to bring more chairs. To be as influential as she was and still maintain that level of humility was outstanding.
“So, Chloe,” Darius said, starting the conversation after dinner was served. “When do you and Axel plan on doing your mating ceremony?”
What sort of a question was that? Why did he care?
“We have not discussed the date yet but when we do, Moonflame will be the first to find out,” I said before stuffing my mouth with food, hoping to deter him from more questions but he just kept going.
“Do you not want to give yourself the chance to find your real mate?”
His question caused the whole table to freeze.
I could not think of a more invasive question that he could ask about Axel and my mating. He had shattered all the rules of politeness because of his curiousity.
Luna Diane’s anger was so thick that I could almost taste it.
Without thinking, I reached out and closed my hand over hers. She glanced at me and I smiled, withdrawing my hand.

“That does sound nice in theory but I also appreciate security. There is no life more secure than being the Luna of a pack as influential as Everdeen.”
I would have thought that the reaction to his last question would have deterred him from asking more but he was relentless.
“So it really does not matter which pack’s Alpha that it is, as long as it is influential.”
Mara choked that time.
I blinked, taking a few seconds to process the meaning behind his words. Against my will and more because of this teenage body, a faint blush worked up to my cheeks.
