My Stepsister Returned To Rewrite Fate But I Became Luna (Chloe) novel Chapter 69

Chapter 69

Axel’s POV

Chloe’s definition of a day off was very fascinating.

At exactly six in the morning, she was up, actually waking me with her light humming that carried through the cabin.

After her shower, she went down to make breakfast. As much as I did not want to get up and leave her to do her thing, the smell of bacon carried me down the stairs.

“Good morning,” I said, brushing my teeth as I entered the dining room.

She did not look away from setting the table as she said, “Bathroom is upstairs. Finish up and then come down before the food gets cold.”

Her tone was blank but it was almost like being taken back to my childhood. Mother never screamed at Jax and I when we were younger. She would give simple instructions in her calm tone like her word was

law.

Of course, there were times we were stubborn and decided to still do what we wanted anyway. That was, until we learned that there were serious consequences if we stressed her even a little bit, the one at the top of the list being the news of our disrespect getting to Father.

I nodded and turned around, going to finish up in the bathroom in record time.

Chloe sat down and already started to eat before I came down.

“How was your sleep?” I asked her, trying to get a conversation going. The cabin was tucked away in the forest, unlike the pack house that always had background noise humming.

“It was slightly off,” she replied clinically without looking up from the history book she was reading. “The bed was very uncomfortable.”

My brows lifted at her bluntness but I took her feedback close to heart. I would find someone to change the bed before the day was up.

“What are you reading?” I asked, trying to read the words on the page. They seemed to be in a foreign language.

“The formation of the Russian federation of snow wolves,” she said, turning the page. “Their customs are very different from ours so I thought to catch up, just in case we got an envoy someday.”

She really was taking her role as temporary Luna-in-training very seriously. Anyone who would see how much effort she was putting into improving her skills and standing out would not think that she was counting down to when she would be allowed to run away from the pack.

Wait, hold on…

“Russian federation?” I asked, trying to see the words of the book better. “Is that book written in Russian?”

Chloe paused for a second, her eyes darting to a spot on the table. “The English version was not a faithful enough translation-”

“And you casually decided on reading an entire piece of literature in Russian?”

Since when did she know how to read Russian? How much of a genius was she?

She returned to the book. “I have read the book in English so it is easier to follow the sentences. Stop making this a bigger deal than it is. It’s just something I am doing for fun.”

After I finished my breakfast and put the plates in the dishwasher, I went to the living room to turn on the television. Chloe remained at the dining table, still reading.

“Is there anything you would like to watch, Chloe?” I called out to her.

She looked up at me and then at the television. “I am not interested. Knock yourself out.”

Neither was I interested in whatever crap was showing on the television but I did not want to stand up and either return to the dining table or go inside. It would make it seem like I was revolving around her.

Which I was not.

So I sucked it up and tried to focus on the movie that was playing on the television.

Halfway through the second movie, I turned again for the umpteenth time to look at her. She had been in the same spot for three hours, eyes scanning the pages at lightning speed.

What incredible discipline. Unlike what a seventeen year old should have.

Then again, Chloe was unlike any seventeen year old I had ever met. She was so accomplished in her own right in a way that most wolves in their late twenties could not even begin to boast of.

At exactly noon sharp, she closed the book and stood up, walking towards the direction of the kitchen. Is there anything you would like to eat for lunch?”

I shot off the couch so quickly that I nearly tumbled. “Let me cook,” I said, grateful to be able to do something except lie down.

My entire body was restless at the feeling of being useless. Chloe scanned me from top to bottom and stepped back without argument, this time heading to the living room.

She sat at the edge of the couch, staring at the television with a strange look on her face. Fifteen whole minutes passed before she rested her back against the couch, allowing herself to enjoy what she was watching.

As I moved round the kitchen, her soft laughter started to waft through the door. The sound made a smile appear on my own lips.
