Chapter 70
Chloe’s POV
Axel and I were still eating our lunch when there was a fierce banging on the door.
I tensed involuntarily and Axel squeezed my shoulder, keeping his hand that was resting behind my head as it is. “Who is it?”
“Axel,” Tony called out. “I know you said that you did not want to be disturbed but the matter is kind of
urgent-”
“Is someone dead or about to die?” Axel retorted before Tony had even properly explained why he was
here.
“No-”
“Then, it can wait until tomorrow,” Axel said, turning away to face the screen.
My hand hovered over his thigh, about to tap him and then paused. Tony would not come here unless it really was urgent. My mind was running, trying to figure out what exactly it might be and then, a strong possibility came to mind.
“Is it Clan Leader Crane?” I asked Tony, knowing that he was probably still standing behind the door, thinking of how to get through to Axel.
The hope in Tony’s voice was clear through his words. “Yes, Celestia just got back and she did not have a very good experience on the road from Moonflame. When her father found out that you two returned yesterday in the helicopter that Moon flame had bought off her, he was furious.”
Axel’s eyes flashed maliciously. Although they seemed to follow the images moving on the screen, I could tell that he was not watching at all. “And he thinks that he can come to the pack house and throw a
tantrum.”
I was not well versed in Everdeen internal politics but I knew that Crane’s influence in the pack could rival even the Alpha’s. Alpha Paul had kept it unchecked and when Axel became the new Alpha of the pack, Crane had grown beyond arrogant, continuing to interfere in pack matters he had no business handling.
Axel would have easily taken care of him if Crane had not gotten the permission from Alpha Paul to create a secondary Elder Council inside the pack of which he was the leader.
The Elder Council, though subordinate to the Alpha, had enough resources and influence to cause real damage to the Alpha family if they wanted to. There was never an outright civil war between Axel and Crane but it was obvious through the council’s dealings that Crane never let go of the fact that his daughter did not become Luna.
“We should go see him,” I suggested. Axel frowned even deeper, clearly discontent with my idea. “Or better yet, we have him come to us.”

Axel’s head tilted and a small smile quirked up the side of his lips. “I see… Tony, bring Crane here.”
Tony did not reply for a moment and then, he asked. “What?”
Axel relaxed even more into his seat. “Bring the clan leader here. He wants to see me, doesn’t he? If he cannot respect the fact that I am spending some time alone with my mate, he should come and meet me
here.”
In this entire situation, I felt the most pity for him. He would have to be the one to relay the message to Crane and receive the first brunt of his anger before he gets to Axel and I.
“You owe me,” Tony said with frustration as he stomped away from the house, muttering his annoyance
under his breath.
I intertwined my fingers and forced myself to calm down. Crane was an obstacle that I was going to encounter anyways. It would be better to meet him sooner than later.
Axel’s other hand that was not around my shoulders slipped down and grabbed my hands. “Are you nervous? He cannot actually hurt you, no matter how angry he is.”
I nodded. Crane was not an idiot to physically put his hands on any current or potential member of the Alpha family but I did not doubt him to attempt to take care of me through long winded means.
“I’m fine,” I replied. I would need to be very careful, not to make a mistake in front of the clan leader.
The door was thrown open a few minutes later without warning. “I really could not believe my ears when I was told that you would not see me because you were bonding with the girl. Tell me, has my daughter been in this house of yours?”
Axel did not bother to stand in greeting like I was sure that he would ordinarily do. Perhaps he had also snapped and decided that he would no longer be a doormat.
A whole minute passed and I realized that Axel was not even going to bother with a response.
“Young Alpha, what is the meaning of this?” Crane asked, the anger in his voice rising.
Axel looked back insultingly casual. “Oh. The thing you said earlier. Was it directed at me?” His calm eyes suddenly flashed a different colour, warning consequences that his mouth did not say. “It sounded like you were scolding me and last I checked, you are not the Alpha of this pack or my father.”
The clan leader looked visibly taken aback and then, his eyes slid over to me, finding a new angle to
attack from.
“Where are your manners?” he spat with a raised brow.
