My Stepsister Returned To Rewrite Fate But I Became Luna (Chloe) novel Chapter 71

Chapter 71

Chloe’s POV

Axel’s hand tugged on mine. “Sit and eat. The food is getting cold,” he said, trying to get me back onto the couch while completely ignoring the clan leader.

Crane watched the entire interaction with an annoyed frown before going ahead to take a seat himself on a chair to our left.

“This is a surprise really,” he commented, his voice now more pleasant. “I had not sent congratulations earlier because I did not think you two were well fit for each other.”

Smart man. He was retreating to know how to advance.

Axel hummed, lowering the volume of the television so he could hear Crane as well. “You still have not sent your congratulations now so your opinion has not changed.”

Crane’s eyes narrowed slightly at Axel’s swift comeback but his smile did not drop from his face.

The entire room was tense. I felt like I was in between two colossal giants fighting for territory and in this war, one of them was going to emerge in some kind of victory, however small.

“Chloe, we are just meeting for the first time. Tell me,” he said and leaned forward. “What exactly is your secret to make our young Alpha here be so smitten with you?”

Smitten? Axel? Sometimes, the way people reacted to my relationship with Axel was as amusing as it was alarming. I would always wonder what exactly the other person was seeing when they made comments like these.

“Even if I did nothing but eat all day, Axel would be expected to still be smitten with me,” I said, shrugging casually. Of course, I did not believe that.

There was nothing you could do to make a man like you. You could lie flat or give your whole life serving him and still end up with nothing.

Crane obviously disagreed with my words but he also threw in a small smirk of triumph, almost elated at my naivety. “You really have never left the pack, have you? When there is nothing about a woman to be attracted to, a man simply moves on to another. Men are visual creatures, you see.”

I nodded, humming as though we were on the same page. His words were built and delivered in a way to make me start doubting my worth and questioning if I was really enough for Axel.

“Huh. If the Alpha of an entire pack could not discipline himself to remain loyal to the woman he said to take as his Luna, just because she does not look a certain way, then we, as wolves, or perhaps as an entire population are in very serious trouble to have such visual creatures as leaders.”

Axel looked up and met Crane’s eyes with a raised brow. “Clan Leader, do you agree? Perhaps you believe that if Chloe somehow became unattractive, I would just casually move on to the next woman with no honour for my word?”

“That is what he was saying but listening back to his words, it does make it sound like you should have moved on to another woman because I am unattractive.” I exaggerated a slight frown. “Or maybe, I misunderstood. Did I misunderstand, clan leader?”

Crane’s entire body was frozen as his mind reeled, trying to figure out how he walked into that trap with his eyes wide open. He looked up at me and met wide, innocent eyes staring at him.

“Clan Leader, is there a problem?” I asked and then turned to Axel. “The clan leader is unresponsive. Does he have any former illnesses?”

“None,” Crane replied to me, getting back to his bearings. As he recovered himself, so did he recover his anger. Now, it had a new target, me. “Chloe, are you deliberately misconstruing my words to make them sound bad?”

My lips stretched into a wider smile. “Of course not, Clan Leader. There are so many interpretations for your words that I simply took one approach. After all, the moment you walked in the door, you expressed your intent dislike of the fact that I was hanging on Axel’s arm.”

I did not give him the chance to interrupt what I was saying by pressing forward the moment I saw him open his mouth.

“You then implied that Axel ought not to find me attractive and should have moved on to another

woman. It takes a blind and deaf fool not to understand what and who you are referring to, in light of the

recent events.”

His mouth opened and closed like he was dried up on comebacks. I imagined that he did not prepare appropriately, probably did not bother with research at all before coming here to get justice for his daughter. He had disrespectfully assumed that he would bully Axel and I into his decision.

Too bad.

I faced the television. “How is your daughter, Clan Leader? I am not sure when Moonflame sent her on the road trip but she should be back at the pack in good health, no?”

Axel could barely hide the small smirk on his lips. Seeing him look so overjoyed was a little bit irritating. If Celestia had come here and shed the tears herself, the outcome of today’s battle might have been

different.

I really needed to turn eighteen soon and pack up to leave this pack and these two-faced men behind.

Crane’s hands tightened around the handles of the armchair until they cracked. His eyes were on Axel.

“You would let this girl speak to me in this matter?! Do you think you are ready to deal with the

consequences of this disrespect?”

Axel’s wolf lost it, snapping to the surface so quickly with a growl that shook the entire building. “Explain to me who the hell you think you are to scold me,” he said, still maintaining his calm.

His claws dug into his chair as he tried to keep his anger at bay and not leap forward to hurt Crane. That would be a whole story and easily spark a civil war.
