Chapter 72
Chloe’s POV
Tony stumbled backwards as Crane opened the door and walked past quickly as though fire was licking
his heels.
He entered the cabin and pointed towards Crane. “You guys were able to scare him off so quickly. I am impressed.”
I smiled at Tony because Axel’s expression was so hard that he might have terrified a ghost. Tony noticed and sat down in one of the chairs near the door, ready to listen in case Axel needed him and ready to bolt in case not.
The two had been friends for as long as Chloe could remember. Not just Alpha and Beta but real friends.
After Axel died in my past life, the death had hit Tony the most. Everyone could see it that the young Beta was never going to be the same again as he vehemently turned down being Jax’s Beta, swearing that he could never serve Everdeen as its Beta, except beside the man he promised to do it with from day one.
Undoubtedly, Axel was a good Alpha. Whether he deserved that level of loyalty was….questionable based on what I had seen of his personal character.
But I had to assume that he was probably better to his friend than he was to the rest of us.
“Crane needs to be taken care of,” Axel said and my brows raised.
Axel had endured all of Crane’s bullshit in my past life so much that Hannah cried about it, calling him weak and spineless for not handling one of his subordinates when he claimed to be Alpha.
One of the few times that Hannah and I agreed on something.
So what sparked this sudden decision? Or had it been in his mind and he was just waiting for one incident to tip it over? But still, it should not have happened so early.
“That man actually believes that he can look me in the eye and speak to me like he is my father,” Axel continued. “He clearly has no respect for the Alpha line of Everdeen.”
I waited for Tony to say something, maybe call Axel out on the fact that he might be making a mountain out of a molehill or a sudden decision. But Tony nodded.
“What do you need me to do?”
Before Axel said anything, I interrupted, “Do you think directly moving against Crane is a bright idea? What happens if your plan works and Crane really is put in his place but your father traces it to you. There is a reason that your father accords Crane the respect that he gives him in the first place.”
The men looked at each other and nodded.
“She has a point.” Tony paused, a small frown slipping onto his lips. “Your father respects Crane in a way

unlike other clan leaders. Why Crane in particular?
“Father owes a life debt to his father, Axel said and refused to elaborate, largely because he might not actually know the story. I was married into their family for ten years and I did not know the full story either, only that oaths and tokens were exchanged and certain promises were made
Does Alpha Paul not realize how much decisions like that are a liability to the pack?” Tony muttered, arms crossing over his chest as he leaned back in his seat
That was the thing with very egoistic Alphas like Paul Everdeen. He was too self-absorbed and confident in his own skills to believe that everyone in Everdeen was subject to him, regardless of how they acted
Somehow, it never caused any major issues during his reign.
But the lack of discipline consistently started to bleed out into various major disputes over the years that Axel and Jax were Alpha. Axel was able to manage it a bit more effectively, taking the time to build systems from the ground up.
Then, he passed away suddenly and Jax had to handle something that no one in the pack except the man who built it knew how to run
I
I took up much of the work, carrying burdens that damn near killed me behind the scenes just so Jax could maintain appearances but the pack was still bleeding out very fast
“Alpha cannot see issues like that.”I turned to Axel, looking at him pointedly. “And because there are so many people around him who manage to go around his direct instructions to handle things in the most effective way, he continues to remain blind to many issues.”
I was pretty sure that Luna Diane did the same as well. When I became Luna and saw the accounting books, I realized how much of a superhero Luna Diane had been, managing the meagre sum that she did
for the pack’s welfare
It was not that Everdeen itself was not wealthy. Alpha Paul would just rather have the money locked up in investments that were often usually very long-term before they yielded any benefits to the pack
Goddess. I could write a whole list of the things that were handled terribly by the Alpha in this administration that the two after him suffered for very immensely.
However, it was not largely my business. Before bigger matters like that started to occur, I would be long gone from the pack. The only thing I would be willing or able to help with are small matters like what is happening now.
“Axel, why not let them out themselves?” I suggested
His head tilted. “What do you mean?”
“Clan Leader Crane is a very proud man. I do not believe that some of the words that he says here are not said in his personal home, in the company of his close friends and family. All we need is a single walk with your father to those parts so he could hear for himself what a people he has raised.”
