Chapter 73
Chloe’s POV
David was moving the lawn when I walked to the house in a floral dress and a picnic basket.
When he saw me, his face contorted to something ugly as he spat. “What are you doing here?”
I smiled, not bothering him with a second glance. “I did not come here to see you. Is Mum home?”
Just then, the door opened. Mum stood in the doorway, wearing the apron I had gotten her for Mother’s Day when I was twelve. Five years and it was still pristine.
“David, I have finished making breakfast. Come in for…Chloe…”
That day, I did not bother with trying to test her motherly devotion to me or giving her the time to agonize whether she should acknowledge me as her daughter.
I simply walked past her into the house, my boots clicking against the newly washed floors. I was usually the one who washed the floors and instantly spotted at least four cleaning errors that the cleaner had
made.
I doubted it was Hannah who did it and I was certain that it would not be David. So it was definitely Mum.
She had become the maid that I used to be. I could not bring myself to feel pity for her; whether because of love or money, she chose this life herself when she could have done the self-respecting thing and divorced David the day that he started to treat her like dirt.
But that was not the reason I was here today.
“I brought cupcakes,” I said, sitting in one of the couches and setting down the basket on the table.
Hannah appeared out of nowhere and ripped the cakes out of the basket. “Is this not from that famous store downtown?! You have to wait weeks to get a reservation! How do you have some?!”
I could always count on Hannah to help me in times like this.
“Oh, this.” I glanced at the boxes like they were some ordinary treats I had baked in my kitchen. “Tony has them delivered for me now and then and they were nice so I just thought to bring some over.”
Hannah only grew angrier. After all, any show of status, even the tiniest hint that I was superior to her made her feel like she was sitting on needles.
“It’s just cake,” she said and tossed them on the floors. “Who wants your dumb cake?”
She was about to step on it but I reached down and grabbed it. As I straightened, the side of my palm hardened and I hit her shin, causing her to stumble backwards.
Her feet had just caught on the carpet when our parents came into the house. I moved to help her before she could faceplant but she pushed me so I fell and hit my head against the side of the table.

Mum let out a small gasp and she ran to my side, clutching my slowly bleeding head.
“Sophia…” David hissed as if reminding her that her place was as a dog by his side.
Her entire body flinched but her eyes hardened. “David, what do you think would happen to us if Axel finds out that she got hurt here? Again by Hannah? We had barely been able to plead with Luna Diane out of the previous punishment. Hannah’s fate will be sealed this time.”
Oh. Mum was not even thinking about me. Her hands trembled as she held my head but it was fear, not
concern.
I tucked my wolf in the back of my mind, forcing my healing to the slowest. The wound continued to bleed onto the carpet until David himself swore and waved his wife away. “Go clean her up and style her hair in a way that the wound would not be very noticeable.”
Mother and I had not even left the room when David turned on his daughter. “And you, what were you thinking? Are you trying to get the entire family exiled?!”
Hannah wanted to defend herself, to find a way to pin this on me. However, this was not a my word against hers scenario. Her parents saw her trip and then saw her push me.
This was her fault. And it must frustrate her that she messed up so spectacularly.
“Dad, I did not mean to, okay?” She said, sounding teary. “I just reacted instinctively.”
David let out an irritated sigh. Whether he was irritated at Hannah herself or just the situation was
unclear.
“Hannah, this is not a matter of if it is a mistake or not. You will not be able to defend this if this gets to
Axel. Like it or not, your sister is the Luna in training.”
“Dad!” she cried
“What?!” he spat. “You are the one who decided to give that position up because of romance. I supported you. Be ready to deal with the consequences of the decisions that you chose.”
Mother smiled in embarrassment as she cleaned my wound. She used disinfectant but I could barely feel the pain after so many times of nursing my own wounds when I got injuries growing up.
“We can move to somewhere quieter,” she said, almost trying to shield me like I was a stranger who was taking a peek into her family’s dirty laundry.
