Chloe’s POV

I watched Celestia and Hannah walk together from the window of Axel’s office with the satisfaction that a plan was coming together well.

Axel came up behind me. “How were you able to predict that they would work together?”

“Instinct,” I replied vaguely, turning around. “Now, you just need to sell the act a little longer, following exactly what I say.”

Axel, more than anyone, would recognize the importance of nipping the Crane family in the bud before they grow too powerful. Whether he liked it or not, this plan of mine was the best shot he had for the time being.

He let out a small chuckle. “Why are you looking at me like you are expecting me to challenge you?”

I cleared my throat, relaxing my shoulders. “Good. I have work to get to.”

Before I could leave, Axel stopped me in the doorway. “Hey, you know that we have a date on Sunday,” he reminded me. It was in times like this that I felt that he was truly enjoying that we were acting like this.

“Sure thing,” I said and shut the door behind me. My entire body leaned against it and I let out a ragged sigh. Viktor,” I whispered and my bodyguard materialized out of thin air. “We are going out. I need to meet Killian and Asher.”

Viktor nodded and was about to head downstairs to get the car ready when I remembered something. “Oh, and… have someone tail Hannah and Celestia. Find out what they are saying but do not engage. I have my own plans.”

Viktor nodded again, not even looking the slightest bit curious as he left. I cleared my throat and turned the corner, running right into Luna Diane.

She was leaning against the wall, staring at me with an analytical gaze. How long had she been standing there?

Did she hear my conversation with Viktor? Maybe even my conversation with Axel? Will she tell Alpha Paul?

I remained silent, waiting for her verdict as she continued to study me. Eventually, she spoke.

“Lunas of Everdeen have a long history of not inserting themselves into politics and power struggles,” she said in a hushed tone. She was not trying to out me.

“Luna, you teach politics-”

“I teach you diplomacy,” she interrupted to say. “And the fine art of understanding a political battlefield so that you will know when to extricate yourself. What you are doing now is not the way a Luna of Everdeen behaves.”

This was a scolding, the fiercest that I received from her in a while but I refused to back down. I did not believe that I was doing anything wrong. If anything, I felt that she might have been more disappointed if I stayed quiet and watched as I was sidelined in the pack house by an outsider.

“Luna, you also teach us to identify potential threats and get rid of them if possible,” I said calmly, hands flat against my thighs. “I have followed your advice and identified a potential threat to the security of my Alpha’s position.”

“Which of your Alphas?” she hissed.

“The one I am going to be married to.”

This was probably the calmest argument that I had been in. If it got out that I was exchanging words with Luna Pane like this, it would be my head rolling before morning but I really needed to convince her.

She could serve as an extra layer of protection if Alpha Paul found out later and decided to punish me for interfering in pack matters.

“I did not cause any direct harm to our pack members. I am simply…helping them see the desires of their hearts and act on them. I cannot be blamed for helping them express the treasonous thoughts on their heart-”

“What a truly insolent statement to make,” Luna Diane snapped, eyes flashing in anger.

It was getting difficult to keep my voice level.

“You know the truth better than I do. Luna, we are not like Alphas who are born into their heritage. We fight for our position until we give birth to an heir that plants us securely in his house. But of course, you know that quite well, don’t you?”

Her body twitched as she was confronted with the truth.

It was a well-hidden secret the circumstances that Luna Diane came to be Luna. Yes, her and Alpha Paul were real mates but he already had a betrothed who coincidentally happened to be Clan Leader Crane’s younger sister.

Back then, she had seduced and climbed into Alpha Paul’s bed before his previous engagement was dissolved and got pregnant with Axel. Hence, she was made Luna of Everdeen.
