Chloe’s POV

I was undeniably nervous as I dialed Luna Silvia’s phone number. It kept ringing and ringing and just when I thought the line would go dead, it connected.

“Chloe!” she exclaimed, sounding out of breath. “I was golfing so I was not beside my phone when you called What is wrong?”

Why did she sound so out of breath golfing?

“Chloe? Is that Chloe?” I heard Sandra yell in the background. “Mum, I want to talk to Chloe too!”

There seemed to be some kind of struggle and then a slap with a yelp of pain afterwards before Luna Silvia came back on the phone. “Chloe, it is not that I do not want to hear from you but I find myself wondering if something is wrong.”

“Not wrong. Nothing is wrong,” I said, my nervousness now turning to excitement. “I don’t know if you remember the research project that I was telling you about. We have completed the prototype and it actually works.”

Luna Silvia gasped and then covered the microphone to yell something in her background. “Darling, keep talking.”

I gave her as quick a rundown as possible as I could give without babbling about the pills. She listened with rapt attention, cutting in at opportune times to ask questions about it.

To have someone so interested in my work despite their lack of understanding was more heartwarming than I thought it was going to be. Luna Silvia trusted me and my judgment in a way that did not make any sense.

“So you need a stream of production?” she asked.

“And word of mouth,” I added. “I need real people who would try it and see that it works…the three of us do not really have any trustworthy credentials except the fact that we love research.”

“We can figure something out, I’m sure,” Darius said.

I paused. Was Alpha David there too? I had been speaking to the whole family without even realizing.

“Hmm…the fact that it remains largely untested means people will be less hesitant to try it. And we want to be discreet so their research is not stolen,” Luna Silvia muttered, figuring out the issues before I had even mentioned them.

“Doesn’t Everdeen have an in-house lab?” Sandra asked in confusion. “Why not use that?”

All of us fell silent as we all knew that was not a request that I could dare make of Alpha Paul, given the situation with him. I would have to explain how I came about the pills and then, from there, start to prove my credentials in front of him.

My family members did not even know that I was done with college. With David as Alpha Paul’s Beta, securing any form of funding from the pack would be difficult.

“Things are complicated back at Everdeen now,” I said softly, not sure how to explain without going into excessive detail. “But, for now, I need to handle the lab work by myself.”

“We can always find a lab for you,” Alpha David said.

“Or build one,” Darius offered. “It would not be difficult to find scientists who want to work with Moonflame.”

Their support was so much that I could not even dream about taking it for granted.

f course, Moonflame will get a cut. I discussed it with them. They are willing to offer a cut of all sales for the first few years-”

“Just have us listed as your official sponsors,” Alpha David said and then added something in a more hushed tone to Luna Silvia. “I realize that this may cause a bit of problems with your pack but you are a minor. Any money you make now can be legally transferred to your parents with or without your parents.

I paused, thinking of if it was worth it to take the risk.

Since I did not care much for Alpha Paul’s standing with me, I should take the deal. If Moonflame was listed as an official sponsor, David and Hannah would think twice before touching my money because they would not know if they would be stealing from Moonflame itself.

After all, if Moonflame and I were in an official agreement, details like the amount of money they take from me, even if it was zero, would be confidential.

“Alright. I will have the contract drafted and sent over to you before the end of the day,” I said, satisfaction swirling in my chest as everything came together.

Axel had promised me a settlement once it was time for me to leave him but his father might contest me leaving the pack with a single dime. I did not want something like finances to delay me leaving the pack so it was good that I had now secured my source of income.

Even if I chose not to work, the money to be made from this pill was enough to keep me comfortable for decades. “Should we head back to the pack now, Miss?” Viktor said when I returned to the car.

I was about to say yes and then remembered the promise I made to that man before I left home. “Take me to the nearest boutique or mall. I need to shop for something.”

Jax used to like almost everything as a gift when I was married to him. From jewels to ties to cold hard cash. It was easy to shop for him because of how materialistic he was.

Just buy whatever and make sure it looked expensive.

Axel, on the other hand, did not even look like he celebrated birthdays at all. Maybe his request had been to spite Celestia into recklessness but he should have given me a hint of what he wanted, at the very least.

I started walking through the mall, quickly scanning through the shops for something that would suit him. While I was browsing, one of the store clerks stepped out and walked up to me.

“Hello, Miss. Are you looking for something in particular?”

My hand raised to tell her no but I decided against it. She seemed to have been working there for some time so she should be able to help.

“I want to get a gift for my…fiance,” I said cautiously.

She scanned me from head to toe, probably surprised by the fact that someone as young as me was engaged.

“We have known each other for years now, friend of the family, but we recently became a couple,” I explained vaguely. “This is the first gift that I am buying for him and I have no idea what to get.”

Suddenly, something like realization dawned in her eyes. “Oh, I see.” She smiled. “Is he the naturally…serious type? Very focused on work and does not express his feelings well.”
