Chapter 83
Chloe’s POV
The summon came early the next morning. I walked into Alpha Paul’s office and met the entire Crane family, sitting on the couch glaring at me in unison.
Axel was there as well and unlike the last few days, he did not have a smile or a warm expression on his face. However, I was not bothered. This was part of my plan.
I needed the Crane family to think they had won and lay it on thick.
I curtsied. “Greetings, Alpha. Clan Leader. Ms. Crane.”
No one replied to me for a whole minute so I remained in my position, knees aching but I did not utter a word of complaint to remind them of the fact that I was still there.
“Father,” Axel said slowly, not even bothering to look at me. It was as though a silent conversation passed between the two men before Alpha Paul’s jaw clenched.
“Sit,” he said and I walked to the couch farthest from him and dropped down, which coincidentally happened to
be beside Axel.
Alpha Paul got right down to business. “Do you think you are deserving of the Luna position?”
If there was anything I liked about Alpha Paul, it was how honest he was. He would rather bite his tongue than pretend to be pleased with something or someone that he was not pleased with.
“Is anyone ever deserving of such an honor?” I replied calmly. “As I have been gifted so will I serve.”
“Answer the damn question!” Laeticia spat, her fist coming down so hard on the wood of the table that it cracked.
“Ms. Crane, I did answer the question. To think I am deserving of a position that I was never prepared for is foolishness. However, I have been gifted this opportunity so I will serve in it to the best of my ability.”
“You have a way with words,” the clan leader remarked coolly.
I smiled in gratitude, bowing slightly. “Thank you, Clan Leader. Luna Diane’s and Luna Silvia’s teachings have been very helpful in grooming my skills.”
It was subtle but it was an astute reminder of the fact that I had Moonflame backing me. Maybe the Crane women might not understand the implication of that but the clan leader would.
A person who was and is still being given the honor of being the lifesaver of the Alpha family of Moonflame cannot be treated lightly. If I were slighted and it got back to Luna Silvia, the entire pack would suffer a blow for it.
But of course, it would be improper manners to threaten them outrightly with that.
“How is Luna Silvia these days?” the clan leader asked, his words slow and curious.
“She is well. She has taken up competitive golfing with her family recently and sounds like she is enjoying it very much.”
Crane nodded, humming. “Has she invited you to play with her?”
“Not yet. Our conversations have not steered towards that recently but if she does ask, I will not turn her down. It will be my utmost honor to contribute to her joy and her feelings of goodwill towards the pack.”

Now, I would like to see the women be disrespectful after hearing that. The two women glanced at each other and Suddenly, the agenda of the meeting changed.
They must have come here to report me but were now rethinking their strategy.
“What would you think about a contest to choose the next Luna?” Alpha Paul said. “I would like to confirm your abilities in person.”
“If that is your will, I see no reason to back down.”–
As much as I was confident in my ability to likely win the contest, I really did not care if I would win or lose. If was forced to leave the pack ahead of time, Axel owed me a settlement that was enough to keep me and my next generation living in luxury.
This might as well be my chance to be banished from the pack.
“Absolutely not.”
Axel’s words settled heavy in the room. They were sharp and direct.
Wow. I knew that Alpha Paul was his father but could he not try and mince words a bit?
Without a moment’s pause, he continued, “I have no idea what the Crane family came to tell you, Father, and really, I do not care to know. But whatever notion they have conceived in their heads about the next leadership of the pack has nothing to do with me and my chosen Luna.”
He leaned forward, elbows resting on his knees. “Then again, Crane, when did the Lunas of this pack become your business? I can understand you being involved when your sister was trying to be my mother but why do you care now?”
A hint of a smirk appeared on my face.
Go on. Admit that you want your daughter to be the next Luna regardless of Axel’s choice. Try that and see where that ends you up in Alpha Paul’s books.
Alpha Paul did not want Celestia to be the next Luna. He had only brought her into the pack house to rattle me. At this point, I had figured out that much.
Now that I was thinking about it, I doubted he wanted the Crane family involved in internal matters but he trusted the clan leader too much. It was that trust that I needed to utterly shatter so he could see Crane for the treasonous little rat that he was.
“I care for the pack and the leadership is the most important thing about the pack-”
“Which is why you are able to conclude from just one conversation with my Chloe that she is not fit for the Luna position,” Axel interrupted to say.
