Chloe’s POV
The Crane family was swift with their backlash. Within the next forty-eight hours, rumours had traveled through the entire pack, questioning my legitimacy as Axel’s Luna.
Some were even going as far to say that my mother and I were trying to take control of the entire pack by keeping a firm hold on the Alpha and Beta of Everdeen.
If I chose to block my mind to the facts and look at the situation from a certain angle, I could see where they were coming from. It was rather strange for a mother and her fatherless child of unknown origin to marry so high up into a pack.
However, this was old news. Everyone knew how David had chased after my mother. Granted the primary reason was for her looks but Alpha Paul would not have allowed her into the pack if she was not capable enough to be the Beta Female.
As for me trying to take control of the pack, if the people who were gossiping chose to think about it for even a minute, they would remember that Hannah was the one being groomed to be Axel’s Luna and then, she was the one who gave up the position and pushed me into it.
If anything, it should be David and Hannah who were trying to use marriage to gain a foothold in the Alpha family. But what could I say?
I could only sit back and watch the situation unfold.
There was a knock on my door, pulling me out of my thoughts. I had been curling my hair absentmindedly and was now finished.
Still wearing my robe, I walked to the door and opened it. Axel stood on the other side, hand raised to knock again. His eyes fell down my body and instantly snapped back to my face. “Sorry. I thought you would be fully dressed by now.”
Today was Sunday, the day we had decided on for our date. It really could not have come at a better time.
Now that the Crane family was becoming reckless in their attempts to discredit me, a date with Axel would be the final thing to drive them over the wall, especially since I was sure that by now, Hannah had told them or at least, implied that I was faking it with him.
I turned back into my room. My makeup was done. All I needed to do was change into my outfit.
Axel stood in the doorway until I pointedly looked at him. “Do you want to close the door or do you want to watch me change?”
He flinched and reached for the door, slamming it shut. Almost immediately, my phone rang.
When I saw the caller ID, my heart did a little twist in my chest. For how long now had I been ignoring his calls?
I let out a sigh and picked up, propping the camera up so he could see my room. A second later, Liam’s annoyed face came up on the screen. “Finally, she decides to grace me with her presence….are you wearing makeup?”
“Hi, Liam,” I said, walking to my closet. Though I was not near the phone, I did not doubt that he could hear me.
“Hey, Chlo. Answer me,” he said, leaning so close to the phone that I could only see his eye. “That is a full face of makeup. I thought makeup and stuff were not your thing.”

“They are not,” I replied calmly. “However, it is good manners to attempt to look my best…”
You are going on a date, aren’t you?” Liam asked. “Isn’t that bastard…I mean, that fiance of yours much older than you? I did not know you were into older guys.’
Technically, between Axel and me, I was the older one. Six years older so I did not feel the age difference much but I could not say that to Liam.
“I guess the right older guy makes all the difference,” I said, zipping up my dress. I picked up two pairs of shoes and stepped out. “Which one?”
Liam’s brows furrowed. “Brown boots. As I was saying, you can run away if you want to. I will have a helicopter come pick you up. Just say the word.”
I smiled as I slipped on my shoes. “Liam, I do not want to cause trouble for me, you or anyone around you. If I ran
away,
I would be branded a traitor. If you took me away, you and your family will be branded kidnappers-
“Like Paul Everdeen can do anything to me,” Liam muttered.
His irritation was as thick as his confidence. It made me wonder for the umpteenth time just who Liam’s family was. I knew that he had to be an heir of some kind, perhaps of a merchant family.
I did not think he was an Alpha’s child but he had a certain air of nobility. That level of charm and charisma was a talent and not really something that could be learned to that extent, especially with how young he was.
I pretended not to hear what he had said as I walked back to my table to put on my jewelry. Liam watched me silently, his lips parted.
