Chapter 88

Axel’s POV

A hand appeared in my line of vision. I turned to see a woman standing directly behind me. “Hi, I’m Lisa. What’s your name?”

I scanned her from head to toe. Hürnan. What did she want with me?

“Axel,” I replied and took another handful of my popcorn., hoping she would get the hint that I did not want to talk and move away. She did not, stepping even closer to me.

My wolf rose to the surface, irritated and on edge but I kept myself under control so I would not lash out at her. She twirled her hair around her finger. “So…I have not seen you around these parts before.”

“I do not live around these parts,” I replied blankly, my senses reaching for Chloe again. She was still at the table. If I had known that this woman was going to come to bother me, I would have stayed at the table with Chloe.

“Oh.” Lisa moved to my front so I could face her. When she saw my face, her smile widened. “What do you do for work? Modeling maybe? Seems like a waste if you do not.”

“I do not model,” I replied to her, not bothering to answer her first question. Not that it was any of her business. “That is really sad. I thought we might be able to work on a shoot together.” She flipped her straight hair over her shoulder. “I mean, I am one of the top models in the industry. More than talent, a lot of gigs come because of my beauty.”

At that, I actually looked at her face. Ehn. Chloe was prettier.

“Good for you,” I said and returned to the popcorn.

That time, her smile faltered. “Am I boring you, maybe? I mean, we come to an arcade to have fun, right and you are just standing in the corner.”

“I am waiting for someone,” I said. A small smile slipped on my face when Chloe’s scent started to get thicker in the air. Finally.

I turned around with a wider grin to see her leaning on the wall a few feet away, staring at me through squinted eyes. “Chloe, I was waiting for you…why are you looking at me like that?”

She stepped closer, looking between my face and Lisa’s. “Axel, why not introduce me to your friend?”

“Her? Oh, we just met.” I pointed to the table. “I was actually thinking we could play this or air hockey. Air hockey is a much faster game so we might enjoy that but billiards seem right up your alley.”

The entire time I spoke, Chloe was looking at Lisa, studying her like she was trying to pick her apart. I fell silent, trying to figure out the war that was going on between the two women.

A moment passed then Lisa stepped forward. She was a bit taller than Chloe and someone, the younger girl managed to look intimidating. “And who is this, Axel?”

Chloe’s head tilted and she gave Lisa the condescending smirk of all condescending smirks. “Chloe, the fiancee.”

Lisa’s face went through several emotions in a split second: confusion, shock, disappointment, sadness and then settled on an expression I had seen so many times on Hannah’s face when Hannah was looking at her younger sister.

Chloe turned to me. “Axel, do you want us to bring her along? I mean, on a date, three is a crowd but she really

seems to like your company and I would hate to separate the two of you.”

ad finally figured out what that edge in her voice meant but by now, it was already too late. It was the same tone that Chloe had used with me whenever Celestia was in the room back when we were in Moonflame.

I had entertained another woman’s advances without realizing it.

Before I could say anything, Lisa responded. “I am sure Axel does not mind. It’s just games, right? You two will get the chance for other solo…hangouts.”

My hand closed over Chloe’s wrists and she pinned me in place with a glare. “Axel, you do not mind, do you?”

My response at the moment did not matter. Chloe was now a woman on a mission and all I could do was nod and come along.

“What was it you said again, Axel?” Chloe’s smile was bright, illuminating her face. She attracted attention in the room, only adding to Lisa’s ire. “Air hockey. Why don’t we try that first…I never did get what your name was.”

Lisa flushed deeply before muttering her name. Chloe nodded once and said, “Cute name. It suits you.”

I had never heard a compliment sound so much like an insult before.

Thankfully, one of the air hockey tables was free at that moment. Chloe settled in on her side first, gesturing Lisa to the other side.

Before the game could start, Lisa made a suggestion that nearly detonated the bomb that was my angry fiancee.” Why don’t we make a bet? First person to ten points wins something.”

I could not pride myself on being able to read subtext but even I knew what Lisa was trying to do. Chloe’s smile remained on her face but her eyes were sharp enough to cut glass.
