Chapter 90
Chloe’s POV
“Are you sure you want to continue with this, Chloe?” Axel teased when our scores finally tied nine points to nine.
My head tilted. It was as though he had forgotten why we were playing this game in the first place. I set down the . handle and crossed my arms over my chest. “Are you going to keep talking or will you play?”
The entire restaurant was now involved, most leaving their games to come watch us. It was a warm feeling to have this many people, strangers on my side, cheering me on.
Axel leaned forward on the table. “It seems some is a tad concerned that they would lose.”
I had no idea how I was supposed to compete with Axel’s alpha senses. It was like he could hear the puck coming before I even moved my hand. The fact that I had gotten two more points since he started playing made me / confident that he was messing with me.
The only reason this had run so long was because he was enjoying the game.
Not that I was not enjoying it too. Somehow, excited half-drunk humans made much better company than other wolves.
A small smile was climbing up my lips. That was of course, when Lisa had to open her big mouth. “Axel, where do you want to go? I mean, once you win, you don’t need to finish this date, right?”
My eyes fell to her hand on Axel’s chest. If I had no reason to lock in, she had handed it to me on a silver platter. Axel looked down at Lisa and one of his fingers twitched. “Alright,” he said and turned back to the billiards table.
My jaw was tight as we both got ready for the last game. Look how ready he was to win a game because of another
woman.
As the game started, I immediately saw that something was wrong. The puck had significantly become slower as it flew towards me. I looked up and saw Axel watching me with something fond in his eyes.
Was he trying to distract me?
For a moment, it worked before I caught myself and sent the ball flying back. Axel’s hand did not move as the puck entered his goal and everyone around us erupted in a roar.
I froze as people congratulated me, replaying what had just happened in my mind over and over. There was no way he would not have heard the puck coming a mile away. Rather, he stood there and let it enter his goal.
He crossed the table and lifted my hand. “I’m hungry again. What do you want to eat?”
My eyes kept darting around his face. Why did he let me win? He had a beautiful woman fawning over him, ready to kiss his feet if he wanted it and he threw away his chance just like that.
Sure, he could not be so familiar with wolf women but Lisa was a human. Even if anyone found out that Axel was cheating on me with her, she would hold no real threat to my position since she could not mate him anyway.
He could have decided to go with her and I could not really fight against it because we had an arrangement.
Suddenly, a look of irritation appeared on Axel’s face. “Chloe, just what do you take me for?”
“What?” I muttered after a moment, not quite sure what he meant.
“You actually thought I was going to play to win so that I would go on a date with another woman? What do you

take me for?”
mouth opened and then closed, guilt swelling in my chest. “I…I’m sorry.”
I was not even sure why I was apologizing but I felt the need to. “Chloe,” he whispered and tilted my head up so 1 could look him in the eyes. “It’s okay…I guess. I just don’t appreciate you assuming the worst of me. I am not a monster who would go out with another woman in front of my own fiancee.”
I was about to reply when I noticed that the people around us were tuned into our conversation. I turned and they instantly scattered, pretending to be engrossed in something else.
Rather than be upset, my cheeks flushed deeper. Axel laughed as I hid my face in his chest.
“You two are adorable,” a man said behind us. I turned to see him with his arm swung over Lisa’s shoulders. Lisa herself kept glaring at me like she wanted to bury me.
I choose to blame the next thing that happened on my teenage hormones and pettiness. I wrapped one arm around Axel’s waist and smirked at her, sticking out my tongue.
She let out a strangled sound and moved towards me, only to be restrained by the man who soon introduced himself as her brother. “Hi, I’m Evan. My sister must have given you two a hard time. We came to apologize.”
Axel’s hand slid up and down my back like us hugging was a normal occurence. I tried not to think of the absurdity of it and consoled myself with the fact that someone might be watching us.
Maybe Crane might find the security cameras of this place and replay the video footage to see the way we really interact with each other. We needed to be on our guard at all times.
“Axel,” he said and shook Evan’s hand. “It’s all good. As long as Chloe had fun playing with Lisa.”
I snorted against his chest at his phrasing. He said it like I was intentionally toying with her, which I was.
“Evan!” Lisa whined, pointing at me. I rolled my eyes, infuriating her even more. “Look at her. She’s-”
“-his fiancee,” Evan said gently. “They are a couple. You have no right to interfere and should apologize for even daring to bet on something like a date.” He turned to her. “As promised, we will cover the bill for your next date.”
“We are not hurting for money,” Axel replied, keeping his tone cordial and completely ignoring Lisa. “It was just a joke that Chloe made, right, baby?”
He looked down at me pointedly like he was daring me to say no. It was not like I was hurting for money either. If I added my gold bars, jewelry collection and the money that my two bio-hackers were going to make me soon, I was already a millionaire.
