Chapter 92

Chloe’s POV
Seeing that I was not willing to respond to him, he sighed. “Is this related to those meetings that you keep going for?”
I guess he would not have been the Alpha that he was if he was this perceptive at the very least.
His fingers drummed on the steering wheel as he thought, trying to figure out what I was not telling him.
A few minutes passed and I thought he had dropped it when he said, “Maybe some new business opportunity, maybe? You seem like you are trying to accumulate funds.”
Spot on again.
He did not look at my face for confirmation. “If it was something you thought to ask Luna Silvia for, then you needed some kind of resources, maybe the influence of her word of mouth. Which means it’s not a product that can speak for itself like something in the arts.”
He paused, his head tilting. “Your degree…it’s not something in the arts, maybe biology. If your family does not even know you graduated already, then you would not want them to know about this…so it’s medicine or some kind of thesis or research.”
That was when he turned to me with almost a smug expression and met the very irritated look on my face. His grin could have solved global warming.
“I’m right, aren’t I?” he asked. “Makes sense why you were talking with university students. Those men…did they invent something with you?”
He had already figured it out anyway so there was no need to lie to him. A few days from now, I will tell the rest of his family when the pill went public.
“It’s their research,” I muttered begrudgingly. “I only gave them the money and a bit of guidance.”
That said, it was his money that I used. I would have to return that to him at the very least so that I would truly not owe the pack anything for this project.
“But enough guidance for them to have a major breakthrough,” he said, nodding with a proud smile. “If it has Luna Silvia’s endorsement, then it must be something really good. She might like you but she would not throw her weight behind something that did not have real potential.”
Was he complimenting me?
I crossed my arms over my chest, gnawing on my lower lip as I tried to dispel the warmth swelling in my chest. He probably only cared because an achievement like the drug would really help with the pack’s reputation.
His happy mood remained until we arrived at the pack house. When he got out, as I was still gathering my stuff, he ran to my side of the car to open the door.
“I forgot that I wanted to take you shopping,” he said as he helped me down from the car. “Next time. Since I remember that someone promised me a next time.”
“Can you not be a child?” I said, rolling my eyes but even that could not stop my lips from tugging upwards in a smile.
Whatever he was about to say was interrupted by someone clearing their throat. Luna Diane stood in front of the

door with her arms crossed over her chest but it was not us she was looking at.
was balanced precariously on a window ledge, trying to sneak out of the house, probably to go and see Hannah. When he finally noticed the three pairs of eyes trained on him, he gulped before attempting to climb back up into, his room.
In a swift motion, Luna Diane leapt up and grabbed him by the collar. “Don’t you dare,” she hissed and pulled him down to the ground.
He fell on his back and let out a groan. “Mum…I only wanted to see my mate. Axel just got back with his own. Why are you only focusing on me?”
Luna Diane’s eyes narrowed and she lowered to a squat. “Are you really comparing yourself to your brother right now? The same brother that took permission before leaving home and kept me updated throughout his date?”
Her hand grabbed his ear, twisting it so hard that I could feel the pain on his behalf. “And even if he decides to stay out late, you think he has not earned it?! Unlike some little rat who keeps sneaking off to a woman’s bedroom every night, he spends most of his day working.”
Seeing Jax rolling on the floor, crying to his mother like a little kid was like balm to my healing soul. Once again, I just could not believe I had loved this man-child for much of my life.
Axel noticed my intense staring and snuck an arm around my waist, pulling me closer. “Mother, is the cinemat ready? I want the movie to start before Chloe bails on me.”
Luna Diane’s expression softened when she heard Axel’s words. “Of course. I set curfew earlier so no one will disturb you too.”
My mind was still trying to comprehend what he had said. “What are we…what cinema?”
Axel did not respond and steered me downstairs to the basement of the packhouse. Behind us, I could still hear Luna Diane scolding Jax.
Hannah would probably lie awake all night and wait for him to come to her but to no avail. No doubt she would hear of what happened by morning. Luna was scolding Jax in front of a pack house filled with wolves who had super-hearing.
Maybe I should even help her out by having Mara spread the information a bit more. She would certainly be delighted to.
“Chloe,” Axel called my name to get my attention.
There was not a cinema underneath the packhouse but the basement area that some of the guys used to game had been transformed into a makeshift movie theatre.
There was no way to convince myself that this was not a real date. “Hey, Axel, don’t you think we should get some rest?”
“Chloe, more than for you, I need to drive Celestia out of the house and knock down Crane a few pegs,” he said, his voice blank.
“She is your friend.”
