Chloe’s POV

There were voices whispering over my head and the sound woke me up. I blinked open slowly and met six pairs of eyes staring at me like I was an alien.

When they saw that I was awake, they instantly scattered to different parts of the room. I tried to sit up but was held down by a weight on my torso.

I looked up and saw Axel. Somehow, we had seeked each other during the night and embraced. Our legs were tangled and his arm rested heavily on my stomach.

“Axel,” I hissed and he muttered something to himself before going back to sleep. His head snuggled into my shoulder and I remained silent, waiting for him to realize what he was doing.

That was when he sniffed my neck and instantly snapped to a sitting position. I followed suit but at a slower pace My entire body ached.

“Wait, what happened?” he asked, rubbing his eyes as he tried to fully wake up.

“Someone decided to smother me in the night.” I snapped, trying to rub my back but my hand hurt even more. Just how much do you weigh?”

“Sorry,” he muttered, turning around to see the other people in the room and waved his hand. “Get us breakfast.”

They all rushed out of the room, whispering to themselves. Before I could stand, Axel held my hand. “Sorry, are you hurting seriously?”

I shrugged him off without a response and tried to get to my feet while forgetting that our legs were still tangled. So I tripped on my way up and tilted forward. He caught me by my waist before I could hit my head on the floor.

That was when the door opened and Alpha Paul, of all people, stood there, glaring at me like I had bewitched his

son.

“I will see you both in my office now,” he said and turned out.

The fact that he had come to seek us out himself meant that this was important. My mind went to Crane again. Had they found a counter-attack?

Whatever they found this quickly could not be good. That is, unless Hannah helped them.

“We should go get ready,” I said, prying myself off of him that time. As it turned out, Axel arrived at his father’s office before I did and I walked in to find Celestia making a whole case in front of Alpha Paul on why my activities in the pack house were suspicious.

When she finally saw me, she whirled around and tossed a file at my feet, Photos and printed papers scattered to the ground.

Slowly, she started to advance on me. “Meetings with men. A fake university degree. Suspiciously large credit card bills at gold and jewelry stores. Chloe, what exactly are you’trying to do in this pack? Do you think the Luna position gives you the right to do whatever you want?”

She let out a small gasp like the news was truly stunning to her, “Unless…do you have some secret lover you are planning to run away with? Is that the reason for all the spending?”

“Axel,” she called him and ran to his side, holding his hand. “She is using you. Can you not wake up and see it?

Chloe Waterson,” Clan leader Crane hissed slowly, getting to his feet. “On account of unfaithfulness, forgery and suspected treason, you are to be locked up to undergo further investigation-”

“Clan leader, I did not know you had so much authority to actually punish someone promised to the Alpha family,” I said, smiling condescendingly. “Anyone who hears this might think you are the Alpha in the room.”

My words sucked the air swiftly out of the room. I raised my hand to my lips slowly like I had said the wrong thing “Oh, I did not mean that he can challenge your authority, Alpha. It just sounded like it to my ears.”

Crane’s fists were so tight that they trembled. “You little…do not try to distract us from your crimes!”

“What crimes, clan leader?” I asked, stepping closer to the table. “Your daughter and sister build a whole case based on half-assed truths and assumptions and you think you can throw me into a prison?”

A low scoff slipped from my lips. “You do not really think Alpha Paul is a fool, do you? That he does not know that you are trying to make your daughter Luna and share the political power of the pack? All this while, he had been gracious to you, hoping you would regain your senses but you insist on being foolish until the end.”

Because I had been listening so intently to Alpha Paul, I heard his fist tighten around his chair.

Saying it openly in front of him and having him observe the reactions of the Crane family was the only way to convince him that they were after his power. He would not believe me otherwise.
