Chapter 96
Axel’s POV
Father and I drank for quite some time. At some point, he had started to chat about the most random things not really realizing that I was stalling him.
Chloe was supposed to find a way to enrage Clan Leader Crane during this period and then, I come around his home with Father and let Father witness the clan leader saying things that he should not be saying.
“Don’t you want to go see your darling Luna?” Father mocked, starting to sound a little drowsy. He had probably forced his wolf to the back of his mind just so he would be able to feel the alcohol.
Suddenly, he frowned. “By now, you would have told me to stop drinking, citing some nonsense about human health statistics. What are you planning? Did that girl put you up to this?”
It was scary how perceptive he was at times. As long as he did not guess too far and assume the nature of my relationship with Chloe, I was fine.
However, now was not the time to be honest with him. I tilted my head, keeping my face blank. While wolves could detect lies, our instincts were not a hundred percent soundproof.
“Chloe is not some devious witch who is always planning something, okay?” I said.
“Is she making you say that?” Father looked behind me. “Is she somewhere nearby?”
He had just asked that when my phone buzzed in my pocket. Both our heads snapped down to the glowing brick. Father looked at me with a raised brow. “Take it out, would you? Do not keep your beloved waiting.”
Had he really accepted Chloe as his daughter-in-law or was this just some elaborate mocking?
The moment I opened my phone, Father snatched it from me. My heart sped up in my chest as he scanned it and then, his eyes narrowed. “What is this supposed to mean?”
“Father, I…” I was not sure what it was Chloe had typed but from Father’s expression, it could not be good.
“She does not send you any good morning or good night texts but randomly reaches out with a screenshot of the current stock market charts,” Father continued and tossed my phone back across the counter.
My face blanked. Stock market prices?
Another text came in. It read: I have no idea which stocks are good and which are not. I want to invest.
Chloe never texted so this was code for ‘it’s go time’ but I also know that she would not have bothered with a useless text. She really wanted me to help her invest in the stock market.
I chose to reply with a voice note. “Chloe, it is nearly midnight. Can’t this wait until tomorrow?”
A few seconds after I sent it, she replied with a single no and then the next text was ‘Now.’
I chuckled softly under my breath as I reached out to the head of my finance team. The moment he saw the
message, he would start working on it. Maybe I could even invest a bit more money than what she would give me for her.
She might not realize it until she had access to her stock portfolio when she was finally about to leave.
Father suddenly groaned as he stood. “You disgust me. I am going to bed.”

“Father,” I said, blocking him. “Actually…Chloe did send me here.”
Pather let out a small scoff, nodding to himself. “I see. My son is being controlled by a woman. And what did she want? Some part of her elaborate plot is not over yet.”
“Well…” I looked down at the ground. “She realized you must be sad after what you said to the clan leader earlier today. He is your friend as much as he is your subordinate and you were forced to speak to him harshly because of – something that his wife and daughter did.”
I was not proud to say that Chloe had coached me exactly on the lines to say, especially since I thought that the entire Crane family was at fault, especially the clan leader. However, if this would help her plan…,
“You want to believe that that girl has such compassion.” Father crossed his arms. “I would sooner believe tha her sister said something like that in a bid to curry favour with me.”
I shook my head. “Tony was there when she said this….she wants me to take you to the guest house to see if you and the clan leader can talk things out. If he goes back home like she thinks he would, things will be sour for a long time.”
Father nodded, finally considering the political implications of a strained relationship with the clan leader. “I suppose that when she is not being a disrespectful little brat, she can have some sense.”
I pointedly ignored the insult and started to leave the room. Father’s hand clamped down on my shoulder. “And just where do you think you are going?”
I pointed up the stairs behind me with confusion and Father shook his head. “You are coming with me. We need to go see them together.’
How had Chloe been able to predict that Father would take me along if I tried to leave?
